Over the past five months Skagway School students have been raising pink salmon from Pullen Creek in the classroom aquarium. In mid-October all of the eggs started developing eyes, then in late November they hatched into alevins. They stayed in this phase getting nutrients from their yolk sacks before hatching into swimming fry in mid-January! Unlike our coho salmon from last year who hang around in the stream for up to 18 months, pink salmon will head out to the ocean to feed after they hatch into fry. On January 24th we braved the cold and had a farewell ceremony for our pink salmon and each student got a salmon to release into Pullen Creek to continue on its journey to the ocean. Hopefully we’ll see them back in the summer of 2019!

Yesterday, as part of Salmon in the Classroom, 4th and 5th grade students learned about the external and internal anatomy of our local Pink salmon. We got an up-close look at their different body parts by dissecting a Pink salmon!

Salmon in the Classroom is starting up again! At the end of August we did an egg take from Pink salmon in Pullen Creek with the Skagway Traditional Council and 4th and 5th grade students. They were transported back to the classroom and fertilized. The eggs now in their tank in the hallway at the school where we can watch them go through the life cycle! In the spring they will be released back into Pullen Creek.
