🚜 A Little Osage County Road History

Long before today’s motor graders, road work looked a whole lot different.

Early graders were pulled by teams of horses, with an operator manually adjusting the blade.

Over time, horses gave way to tractors, tractor-pulled graders gave way to self-propelled machines, and eventually to the powerful motor graders our crews use today.

And this history was happening right here in Osage County.

Old newspaper articles tell of crews in Skiatook using teams and a road grader. One article even describes the purpose of the work, creating an outlet for water to run along each side of the road instead of down the middle.

By 1920, an Osage County crew was out “dragging and grading roads like old timers,” using a “mammoth road grader,” an International truck and a Ford tractor.

Other articles document everything from grading streets to repairing paved roads, giving us a pretty neat glimpse into the equipment and road work of more than a century ago.

Today, the equipment looks very different, but many of the basic principles of road maintenance, grading, shaping and drainage, have been around for generations.

Osage County history is everywhere; sometimes you just have to look down the road.

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE, SEPT. 3 & 4 🚧

Our District 2 crew will be working on N. 31st W. Ave., south of W. 113th St. N., today and Friday.

🚫 N. 31st W. Ave. will be CLOSED to through traffic from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. both days.

🏠 Residents who live along this section will still be able to get to and from their homes, and emergency services will have access.

Please use an alternate route, N. 34th W. Ave. or W. 107th St. N. may be options depending on where you're headed.

Please slow down, watch for signs and barricades, and keep an eye out for our District 2 crew. We want everyone getting home safe!

🚧 ROAD WORK & TRAFFIC NOTICE, TODAY, SEPT. 2 🚧

Heads up, Osage County!

Our District 2 crew will be working today near the intersection of W. 113th St. N. and N. 31st W. Ave. for road work and tree trimming.

⚠️ W. 113th St. N. will remain open, but traffic will be slowed and may be temporarily stopped at times while our crew is working.

🚫 N. 31st W. Ave. will be closed on the south side of W. 113th St. N. during the work.

If you normally travel N. 31st W. Ave., please plan to use an alternate route. N. 34th W. Ave. or W. 107th St. N. may be options depending on where you're headed.

🕒 Today's work should be completed around 2:30 to 3:00 p.m.

We will also have additional road work in this area tomorrow and Friday, and we'll post more information about those plans shortly.

Please slow down, pay attention to signs and our crew, and use extra caution when traveling through the area. We want you safe, and we want our District 2 guys going home safe at the end of the day, too.

Data centers have become a BIG topic of conversation lately, but this conversation is much bigger than Osage County, or even Oklahoma.

Communities across the country are asking many of the same questions we are asking here about water, electricity, infrastructure, economic development, local control, and what the rapid growth of data centers could mean for the future.

What is happening in our area has even drawn national attention.

Commissioner Steve Talburt was recently interviewed on the national level to share a small part of what Osage County has been experiencing and the questions being raised here locally.

Whether you support data center development, oppose it, or are still trying to understand all of it, this is an important conversation to have.

Technology is moving quickly. These projects are getting bigger. And the decisions being made today could have long-term impacts on communities for years to come.

Osage County isn't alone in trying to figure out what that future should look like.

This isn't just a local conversation anymore. It's a national one.

How data center developers are spending their way into communities.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond met with local residents this evening at the Rock Volunteer Fire Department to discuss concerns surrounding the proposed data center.

Commissioner Steve Talburt attended to hear directly from residents.
