INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY & COLUMBUS DAY OCTOBER 12, 2026

History is more than dates in a textbook. It is the stories of those who came before us, the cultures that shaped our communities, and the people who continue to influence who we are today.

Today, our nation observes Columbus Day, a federal holiday recognizing the historical voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492. The day is also recognized by many communities as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring the history, cultures, resilience, and contributions of Native American peoples.

Here in Oklahoma, Indigenous history is not simply a chapter of the past. It is a living, thriving part of our present.

Our state is home to 39 federally recognized tribal nations, each with its own history, traditions, government, and cultural identity.

In and around Skiatook, the influence and contributions of Native American communities are woven into the history of our land, our neighborhoods, and the generations of families who call this area home.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day provides an opportunity to recognize the strength and perseverance of Native communities, acknowledge the hardships and injustices experienced throughout history, and celebrate the traditions, languages, and cultures that continue to thrive today.

Columbus Day also provides an opportunity to reflect on the historical events that shaped the Americas and the different perspectives through which that history is understood.

At the Skiatook Police Department, we believe that respect begins with understanding, and strong communities are built by recognizing the people and histories that make them unique.

As we observe this day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to learn something new, appreciate the diverse heritage of our community, and treat one another with dignity and respect.

Because while history cannot be changed, the way we learn from it and the respect we show one another can help shape a better future.

From all of us at the Skiatook Police Department, we proudly recognize and honor the history, heritage, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples today and every day. As we also observe Columbus Day, we reflect on the historical events that helped shape our nation, recognizing that understanding our shared history, respecting different perspectives, and honoring the cultures that make up our communities are essential to building a future rooted in unity, dignity, and mutual respect.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY - OCTOBER 10, 2026

Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.

Not every emergency has flashing lights. Not every wound is visible. And not everyone who needs help knows how to ask for it.

Every day, people in our community face battles the rest of the world may never see.

The parent holding everything together while quietly falling apart.

The teenager smiling at school while struggling with anxiety or depression.

The veteran carrying memories that never seem to fade.

The first responder who spends their shift helping others but struggles to ask for help themselves.

The friend, coworker, or neighbor who says, “I’m fine,” because explaining the truth feels impossible.

Mental health doesn’t discriminate. Struggling doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human.

At the Skiatook Police Department, we know some of the most difficult calls for help never come through 911.

Sometimes, they’re the conversations that never happen. The warning signs nobody notices. The person waiting for someone to listen.

This year’s theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” reminds us that behind every struggle is a real person with a story worth hearing.

Real change begins when we stop judging, start listening, and recognize that everyone’s experiences matter.

You don’t have to pretend you’re okay.

You don’t have to face everything alone.

Asking for help takes courage.

Your struggles do not define your worth.

And to those supporting someone through difficult times: Be patient. Be present. Listen without judgment.

You don’t need all the answers to make a difference. Sometimes, simply being there means more than you’ll ever know.

NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO?

Call or text 988 for free, confidential support through the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.

For immediate danger, call 911.

Protecting our community means caring for more than physical safety. It means hearing the voices that often go unheard and reminding people they matter.

YOU MATTER. YOUR STORY MATTERS.
