Walking in Our Boots: Karen Lynch Experiences Live Fire Training

Recently, Karen Lynch, Chair of the Skippack Township, Pennsylvania Board of Supervisors, joined Skippack Fire Company members for a live burn training exercise to experience firsthand what volunteer firefighters encounter during emergency responses.

One of her biggest takeaways was the physical challenge of the job.

"My biggest surprise was how heavy the equipment is to wear. You always hear this, but until you put it on, you can't appreciate it. Then how much sweating is involved and the importance of good hydration."

Karen also gained a new appreciation for the importance of regular training and the value of having a burn building in our community.

"We're lucky to have a training facility in our backyard and it is critical to run people through regular drills."

Inside the burn building, she witnessed fire behavior, the effects of smoke, and the near-zero visibility firefighters face.

"I was amazed at the lack of visibility for firefighters and how they use the back of their hand to navigate a room."

The experience left her with a deep appreciation for Skippack's volunteers.

"I wish people knew how fortunate we are to have such brave and dedicated people who are willing to 'go in' when common sense tells you to 'run out.' And they all do it as volunteers!"

Thank you, Karen, for stepping into our world and seeing firsthand the training, dedication, and sacrifice required to protect our community.

Columbus Day

"Few celebrations marked the voyage of Columbus until 1792..... a ceremony was held in New York honoring Columbus, and a monument was dedicated to him. Soon afterward, the city of Washington was officially named the District of Columbia, and made the capital of the United States. Fire Prevention Week and beyond

Fire prevention is not just safe practices at home; but also a community being ready, willing, and prepared to respond when the call comes. Institutional memory is one of the few advantages a volunteer company has. It only stays an advantage if someone younger is in the bay to inherit it. Skippack has been protected by neighbors for more than 126 years. The next stretch depends on people who are willing to learn what the current members already know.

Fire Prevention Week - Events

After a busy Friday and Saturday, Sunday and Monday included additional community events.

On Sunday, crews attended the Harleysville Fire Company open house and expo. Despite the damp weather, many visitors turned out to view the fire apparatus and learn about fire safety.

On Monday, crews visited the nearby Goddard School. During the visit, students were reminded about key safety tips for children.

Thanks to Harleysville Fire Company, Goddard School, and all participating crew members. Special Thanks to Vice President Ray Lavenberg for coordinating all our Fire Prevention engagements.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK October 4-10, 2026

In our changing world, new technologies call for us to educate ourselves on new fire risks that we may bring into our spaces. This year Fire Prevention week again turns its focus to Battery Charging education. Please take the time - every time - to understand new rechargeable battery operated devices.(i.e. scooters/bikes/tools) and follow the 6 tips to enhance your safety.

That said, we can't forget the fundamentals either. Smoke Detectors/ Fire Extinguishers/Escape Plans.

Big Bad Bonfire Standby

Upper Salford Fire Company provided coverage at their annual Bonfire at Spring Mount. Crews with Utilty 86 and ATV 86 were able to assist during the event. Fun event....and no fire services needed.

Two-car accident

Skippack firefighters responded to their second call of the day just after noon on Saturday at the intersection of Rt. 73 and Cressman Rd. They controlled traffic, cleaned up debris and spilled fluids, keeping the scene safe until the cars were removed and the ambulance left.
