The Skokie Park District is proposing a bond referendum on the November 3 ballot. But what exactly is a bond referendum?

A bond referendum is a way for voters to decide whether a local government can borrow money to fund major projects. Think of it much like taking out a mortgage to pay for a home—borrowing funds now and repaying them over time. The park district is proposing a 20-year, $53 million referendum.

⭐️ STAFF SPOTLIGHT: FABIAN P. ⭐️
Meet Fabian, a Horticulturalist in his third season with the Skokie Park District’s Park Services Division. With a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Fabian brings a passion for plants, trees and the great outdoors to his work. Fabian first discovered the horticulturist position while in graduate school and saw it as a chance to gain hands-on experience in his field. Over time, that opportunity grew into greater responsibilities, new skills and a deeper appreciation for the work. His favorite tree? The Ginkgo, a tree we have located at Laramie Park.
One of Fabian’s favorite memories with the Park District came during the renovation of Pooch Park, where he worked alongside several teams on everything from fencing and soil work to tree removal, planting and the addition of a gazebo. And, of course, there was the occasional lunch break featuring an entire pizza shared with the crew! His funniest memory may be a little more unexpected: on a rainy day, Fabian and a coworker were given what sounded like an important special assignment only to discover they had been selected to clean a bouncy house. Fabian was happy to roll with it, quite literally bouncing his way across the top to get the job done. For Fabian, the best part of working for the Park District has been gaining real-world experience and seeing firsthand what a little patience, care and maintenance can do. As he puts it, it’s amazing to watch nature thrive.
