Sergeant Kruswicki held various positions not limited to a bicycle officer, a member of the tactical intervention unit, a special enforcement team member, an instructor, detective, and finished his career as a patrol sergeant. Only two days left to apply for a Village of Skokie and Oakton Community College Workforce Training Scholarship!

The Village of Skokie Health and Human Services Department, in partnership with the Oakton Community College, is offering Skokie residents seeking to improve their resume and re-enter the workforce a grant for free tuition for one of Oakton Community Collegeโ€™s short-term certificate programs (18 credit hours or less). To qualify for this program, residents must be unemployed or underemployed and their household monthly gross income must be within 150% of the Federal Poverty Level.
A variety of certificate courses are available for Microsoft Office programs, Computer Information Systems, CAD training, health careers and much more.

Residents interested in applying for this program must submit an application and supporting paperwork to the Village no later than March 31, 2022.

The US Drug Enforcement Administrationโ€™s (DEAโ€™s) National Prescription Takeback Day is on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Skokie Police Department, 7300 Niles Center Road, Skokie, Illinois, 60077. Please bring unwanted, unused, and expired prescriptions for safe disposal.

Items accepted for disposal include:
โ€ข prescription medications
โ€ข prescription patches
โ€ข prescription samples
โ€ข prescription liquids (in a closed original container with identifying information removed)
โ€ข all over-the-counter medications (i.e., pain relievers, cold medication, etc.)
โ€ข pet medications
โ€ข vitamins and supplements
Please empty loose pills/tablets/capsules from their original container into a resealable plastic bag (pills may remain in blister packs which can be placed into a resealable plastic bag).
Bring the sealed plastic bag to the Skokie Police Department, where property officers will be on hand to collect items for proper disposal.
Empty prescription bottles cannot be accepted for disposal at the Skokie Police Department. Remove identifying information from the prescription label and discard empty prescription bottles appropriately.

This program does not accept:
โ€ข needles/sharps
โ€ข illicit substances, methamphetamine, or cannabis
โ€ข prescription ointments
โ€ข prescription lotions
โ€ข aerosols
โ€ข thermometers
โ€ข bio-hazard or infectious waste
โ€ข food items
โ€ข personal care products
โ€ข hydrogen peroxide or alcohol

The Village of Skokie also offers an expanded Drug Collection/Disposal program. A white drop-off box located in the lobby of the Skokie Police Department is for residents to turn in unwanted, unused, and expired prescriptions at any time following the guidelines above.

Skokie Police Officer, Claudia Contreras, was sworn in this late summer, and last night at the Chicago Blackhawks game, she was honored alongside another member of her unit for their upcoming deployment this fall. Officer Contreras is an Army Captain and will be the Commander of this unit's deployment. She has served with the Army Reserve since 2016. Thank you, Officer Contreras, for your service!

Meet America, or "Meri" for short!

The Skokie Police Department came into possession of Meri on Independence Day this year after a Skokie resident located her on their property. Officers quickly noticed she had a very gentle, sweet personality, and named her "America" after the day she was found.

Unable to locate Meri's owner or a shelter to house her, SPD coordinated with SIT Service Dogs to train Meri as a comfort dog, knowing she had great potential. The Skokie Police Department looks forward to Meri's return to the police department to be a comfort dog for staff as well as the Skokie community after she completes her training!
