Construction progress is moving right along! 🚧

These photos show the new entrance from Highway 106 to the future bus loop. The new access road will wrap around the edge of the existing parking lot and continue through the former playground area. Beyond that, on the north side of the field, will be our new transportation center and bus parking area.

Crews will soon begin finishing the roads and then move toward preparing the site for our new playground. This phase—including the bus loop and playground—is currently scheduled for completion by January 1.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding throughout construction. There is still plenty of work ahead, but it is exciting to see the progress and think about everything that will be accomplished over the next three years! We’ll continue keeping our community updated along the way.

MEET OUR 6TH GRADE ELA/SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER - JULIE MIDDLETON DURAN!

Tell us a little about yourself and what you’re looking forward to at Hood Canal!

“I am excited to join the Hood Canal Orca family! I grew up in Wenatchee and look forward to learning more about this beautiful community and surrounding area.

Language Arts and teaching drama are passions of mine. When I am not at school, I love testing new recipes, running, and spending time with friends and family.

I know this is going to be an amazing school year, and as we grow, there will be many more positive adventures to come. Thank you for the warm welcome I’ve received!”

Welcome to Hood Canal, Julie! We’re so happy to have you as part of our Orca family!

MEET OUR 3RD GRADE TEACHER — KAYLA JANOWSKI!

Tell us a little about yourself and your new role at Hood Canal!

Hi all! I am so excited to be the new 3rd grade teacher at Hood Canal School! I am a native Washingtonian, born and raised in Moses Lake. After living in Chewelah for a year, where I began substitute teaching, my husband and I moved to Shelton.

I began working at Hood Canal shortly after moving to Western Washington as a paraeducator while also taking online courses to earn my teaching degree. I graduated last January and am looking forward to beginning my first year as a teacher!

What are you most excited about in your new role?

I am looking forward to continuing to build positive relationships with our students, families, and staff. The students I will have in third grade were kindergartners when I started as a paraeducator! I spent that school year supporting their classroom and also served as their substitute teacher.

It has really come full circle, and I look forward to learning even more about them and providing fun, meaningful experiences for them.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

I enjoy lounging on the couch crocheting, reading books, or doing puzzles. I also love baking bread and sweets! We have two dogs, Ranger and Gala, who have tons of energy, so we often go on hikes and outdoor adventures.

Just for fun — what’s something about you that might surprise us?

Teaching is actually my second career! I originally went to college to study agriculture and become a crop scientist, specializing in plant breeding and plant pathology. I loved my research on canola and earned a Master of Science degree in the field.

Life eventually led me in a different direction, and I discovered my love of education and helping others. I began substitute teaching, which ultimately led me to where I am today!

We are so excited to see Kayla begin this next chapter at Hood Canal! Please join us in congratulating her on her new role as our 3rd Grade Teacher!
