May was a busy month at STPMAD!

Our team worked diligently to monitor mosquito populations, address resident concerns, and perform treatments as the weather allowed! Everyone dedicated to protect public health throughout St. Tammany Parish.

From field inspections and landing rates to aerial operations and arbovirus testing, every part of our Integrated Mosquito Management program contributes to data-driven mosquito control efforts.

Swipe through to see what mosquito season looked like behind the scenes in May!

Have you noticed our jeeps out early in the morning? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿš™

Whether you're heading to work or walking your kids to the bus stop, you might catch our team in actionโ€”stopping mosquitoes before they become a nuisance!

Larvicide treatments are a vital part of mosquito control in St. Tammany Parish. We use a natural soil bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), to target mosquito larvae early on, stopping them from becoming biting adults that can spread disease.

The Southern House Mosquito is the main vector of West Nile Virus in the area. Our team actively monitors and treats over 700 miles of septic ditchesโ€”favorite breeding grounds for this mosquito and polluted standing waterโ€”to help protect the community. If you notice a potential mosquito breeding site nearby, request an inspection and treatment through our service form. For more larvicide information, visit our website or contact us today!

๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿ”ฌ Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Scout Open House! We had a great time teaching local Scouts and families about mosquito biology, arbovirus testing, surveillance, and the important work that goes into protecting public health in St. Tammany Parish.

From insect activities and lab tours to learning how we monitor mosquito populations across the parish, we loved sharing a behind-the-scenes look at mosquito abatement operations with our community.

Thank you to all the Scouts, leaders, and families who spent the afternoon with us. We hope you had as much fun learning as we did teaching! ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸฆŸ

Stay tuned for other open house opportunities!

We see you. We hear you. Weโ€™re coming!!

Whether by plane, helicopter, or truck, every night this week our team is going to aggressively respond to the huge mosquito populations this weather has created across St. Tammany Parish.

That is... weather permitting. Unfortunately, our treatments are ineffective in the rain as the droplets canโ€™t stay suspended in the air.

In between spray treatments, biologists are working to inspect and treat flooded areas on wooded lots they have access to.

If you live near a wooded area, we know your mosquitoes are bad. We will be coming around as fast as the rain will allow! If you would like us to send a biologist out to your house, fill out this form: https://stpmad.org/service-request-form/

And hopefully we can get you some relief!

Did you know we have a weekly Arbovirus Risk Map available on our website? ๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

Our field teams collect our overnight mosquito traps throughout St. Tammany Parish on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and those mosquitoes are tested in-house for viruses like West Nile Virus (WNV).

Every Monday, we update this interactive map using the latest surveillance data, including mosquito trap counts and arbovirus testing results collected right here in the parish.

This map is a key tool in our Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) strategy, helping us identify areas with elevated arbovirus activity and make informed decisions on surveillance and treatment.

Recent heavy rainfall across St. Tammany Parish has created ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

๐ŸฆŸOur surveillance efforts are showing increases in woodland and coastal mosquitoes in traps throughout the parish, as standing water allows mosquito populations to develop quickly.

Our team is actively monitoring mosquito activity and is prepared to conduct treatments as soon as weather conditions allow!

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Rain and wet conditions can impact nighttime treatments by reducing effectiveness, as rainfall can prevent treatments from remaining suspended in the air during peak mosquito activity periods.

๐Ÿ  Want to help reduce mosquito activity around your home?

After rainfall, remember to TIP & TOSS standing water from containers, toys, wheelbarrows, clogged drains, and other outdoor items that can collect water and become mosquito breeding sites.

One way our field biologists measure mosquito activity is through landing rate counts, a surveillance method that is part of our Integrated Mosquito Management approach.

During a landing rate count, a biologist stands in one spot for 60 seconds and counts the number of mosquitoes that land on them. These counts help measure mosquito abundance and can guide treatment decisions across the parish.

And yes, this video is also 60 seconds long! ๐Ÿ‘€

Rewatch it and see how many mosquitoes you can count.

๐ŸŒฆApril showers bring May flowers, and mosquitoes!๐ŸŒท๐ŸฆŸ

Quick tip: With all the rain we have been getting, dump and drain any standing waterโ€”mosquitoes can breed in as little as an ounce! Check plant saucers, buckets, tarps, birdbaths, and even toys. How many water holders can you find around your home? Take five minutes each week to keep your space mosquito-free!
