𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛’𝐬 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 - 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚

As part of Slidell Noon Lions Club international outreach program over $6500, along with electronic braille-training tablets and sound-emitting soccer balls, were donated to the Kenyan Salvation Army’s Thika School for the Visually Impaired in 2025. The idea to help came after Slidell Lions Club members viewed a video of school students joyously playing soccer with a sound-emitting soccer ball. Fighting Blindness has always been the Lions Club’s core mission, with over 2 million members in more than 46,000 clubs across more than 200 countries worldwide.

The school currently has over 400 students, including many orphans who live at the school full-time. The school was established in 1947 in old WW2 British Army barracks. Lion Ferrari viewed the terrible conditions firsthand, especially one of the male dormitories that was in desperate need of repairs.

Repairs to the boys' dormitory have now been completed, thanks to the SNLC’s donation that replaced the 80-year-old roof, applied outside wall stucco, replaced windows, interior paint & plaster, exterior improvements, tiled shower stalls, tiled sinks, and tiled toilets & stalls.

This year, funds will be used to expand the student cafeteria, correct hazardous conditions due to overcrowded seating, and improve access for blind students to chairs and tables.
So far, more than $3600 has been raised from the SNLC, individual Lions Club members, and local civic and social organizations – including one Slidell Carnival Krewe.

Dr. Polk was a founding member of the Slidell Lions Club in 1928. He was on the Lions committee responsible for getting residential phone serve started in Slidell. He received the first residential phone at his home on First Street.

In 1926, Admiral Richard Byrd flew over the North Pole. Along with an American Flag, Admiral Byrd also carried a Lions Club Flag. He was a member of the Washington D.C. Lions Club and carried a Lions flag denoting his membership. He would later fly over Antarctica, accompanied by his Lions flag.

In 1935, Amelia Earhart, an honorary member of the New York City Lions Club, completed a record-breaking nonstop flight from Los Angeles to Mexico during the Lions Clubs International Convention in Mexico City.

In 1944, the world's first eye bank was created in New York City. Today, most eye banks are Lions-sponsored.

In 1945, the Lions Club International assisted in drafting the United Nations Charter, starting a lasting bond with the U.N. To this day, Lions Club International remains the only international service organization with a permanent seat at the U.N.

In 1947, the Lions Club became the largest service club organization in the world (a position it still holds today).
That same year, Lions were given status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council.

In 1956, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station was built. Soon after, 16 scientists and military personnel chartered the 59ers Lions Club there.

In February 1973, the association welcomed its one millionth member.

In 1977, Lion Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer and Lions Club member from Georgia, became president of the United States of America.

At the Slidell Noon Lions Club, our motto is simple: “We Serve.” And nowhere is that service more powerful than in our support of the Leader Dog Foundation.

Founded in 1939 with just $400 and an idea, the Leader Dog Program has grown to train and pair service dogs with visually impaired individuals at no cost to the recipients. That first year, only four graduates completed the program — today, hundreds of teams gain independence and confidence thanks to these incredible dogs.

The process is intensive: each dog and recipient are trained together to form a life-changing partnership. Costs for training, care, and hands-on instruction can easily exceed $20,000 per team — but the reward is immeasurable. As the program proudly says: “These Dogs Change Lives.”

🐶 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹:
For decades, the Slidell Noon Lions Club has sponsored multiple leader dogs each year, taking an active role in selecting which puppies to support. Members receive photos and biographies of each potential dog and vote to decide sponsorships. This hands-on tradition allows us to see the journey from puppy to life-changing companion, knowing we’ve made it possible.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐲𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬

Many of us have eyes that don’t work like they used to, so we require visits to our optometrist for new eyeglasses periodically. This is an expense for you, but also an opportunity to be a great benefactor to others.

𝑺𝒍𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝑵𝒐𝒐𝒏 𝑳𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒃 is asking optometrists and you, the public, to donate your old glasses to the Lions Club. Lions have their appointed rounds to locations that collect glasses for them, and locations hosting Lions collection boxes.

The eyeglasses are brought to the Lions Den on Cleveland Avenue in Slidell, where Lion members sort them out. Broken glasses, frames without lenses, loose lenses, and eyeglass cases are discarded. We no longer collect sunglasses for doctors traveling to other countries, because countries no longer allow them to come in. If you know of anyone who can use sunglasses, cases, etc. please let us know; we still come across some of those occasionally.

Once enough glasses have been collected, the Lions Eye Foundation collects them from the local Lion dens to transfer to the Houston processing center. There, other Lions members ensure each pair is washed, sanitized, and sorted by prescription.

Now that we have all these eyeglasses, what do we do with them all? Well, there are many humanitarian efforts organizing people of various abilities, i.e. doctors, dentists, optometrists, to make expeditions to other less fortunate countries in need of help. The Lions provide them with prepackaged boxes of eyeglasses to hand out to adults and children in those countries who can’t normally afford them.

By law, the used eyeglasses can’t be resold or distributed in the United States; they would disrupt the optical industry. Just think how much you pay for a new set of lenses and frames, usually a couple of hundred dollars, and multiply that by a couple of thousand collected by our club each year, and you see the value to this program in helping others. Last month, the Slidell Noon Lions Club counted over 1600 pairs to go to Houston. This vital humanitarian service is provided thanks to the efforts of local Lions Club members and compassionate members of the public.

Please donate your used glasses. Ask your optometrist to donate them. We all usually require a change in our prescription at least every couple of years, and many of them collect for the Lions.

Lions were called by Helen Keller to be “Knights of Sight.” This is just one of our programs. Cub Sight, where we check children 6 years of age and under to help detect issues with their sight, free of charge, is one we are very proud of locally.

𝐂𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 is conducted by Slidell Noon Lions Club volunteers and offered 100% FREE to schools, daycare centers, churches and residents of Louisiana. Children are individually screened using a special non-invasive, vision screening device from 3 feet away. This device takes a photo of your child’s eyes and is able to detect many different abnormalities.

𝐂𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 is a vision screening program designed to identify existing or potential vision disorders in children. The program is designed to screen children and to inform the parent or guardian of their child’s results. Through early detection and early treatment, many vision problems can be corrected or even reversed with the help of an eye doctor. In some cases, blindness may be prevented.
