Another awesome customer sighting was reported to The Birdwatchers Store!!! A customer has had a scarlet tanager coming to visit his jelly feeder! Scarlet tanagers are definitely considered to be "elusive". These birds can mostly be found in northeastern woodlands, especially in oak forests. Like many of our summer migrating residents, scarlet tanagers winter over in South America! The males are incredible bright red, with a slight orangey tint, with black tails and black wings; females are a muted yellow. Like our goldfinch friends, scarlet tanager males molt in the late summer and grow a whole new set of drab, greenish-yellow feathers with the same black wings. These birds are protein eaters, meaning they eat mostly all bugs and insects; you will not usually see them at a seed feeder! However, they do love berries and you may see them at a jelly oriole feeder if they are nesting in the area. A fun fact about scarlet tanagers: "the oldest Scarlet Tanager on record was a male, and at least 11 years, 11 months old. He was banded in Pennsylvania in 1990 and found in Texas in 2001." Have any of you seen a scarlet tanager this summer? Stop on in to The Birdwatchers Store Monday-Saturday from 10-5 to see what we have visiting the backyard! Happy birding!

A few weeks ago, I got a message from a frequent customer that a Northern Bobwhite had visited her backyard! She was kind enough to send me a photo of it to share with you all. She is a Slippery Rock resident so this was close to home. Northern Bobwhite are the only native quail in the Eastern US! Its whistling call shouting "Bob-WHITE" can be heard more often than the bird can be seen. They are usually found on farmland and in wide open brushy spaces and roadsides. They have some really interesting habits and behaviors, too! They roost in groups of a dozen or more called "coveys". At night, they roost on the ground in circles with their tails at the center and their heads facing outward. In courtship, the male does an awesome dance; he turns his head, drops his wings, fluffs up his feathers, and rushes at the female multiple times before circling around her with his showy strut. These birds are near threatened in the US with their populations declining continuously the past few decades, especially in the southern states. Northern Bobwhites have been around for a very long time! According to All About Birds by Cornell Lab of Ornithology, "The bobwhite genus is represented by more than 700 known fossils, dug up in sites ranging from Florida to Arizona to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Some of these fossils are at least 2.5 million years old." Have any of you seen a Northern Bobwhite? The Birdwatchers Store loves getting messages of unusual sightings to share with all of you! Stop on out to see us Monday-Saturday from 10-5 just outside of Slippery Rock, PA!

This past Sunday, we had our first Meet the Author event at The Birdwatchers Store with local author Teri Ackerman! Teri wrote 3 children's books in a series about her Australian Shepherd, Rusty and his adventures! We were able to be all set up on our back deck and it was an absolutely beautiful day to spend outside at BWS! Rusty, was loving all of the attention from our guests and the kids enjoyed a live reading of Teri's first book. We now have all 3 of Teri's books available for purchase here in the store and have them featured in the children's section! She is now one of 8 local authors that have their books for purchase here at The Birdwatchers Store. We are so happy to be able to partner with and support local artists of all kinds and look forward to having more events like this in the future! Stop in Monday-Saturday from 10-5 to see what we have for you and to check out our new books!

Yesterday was such a beautiful day for a nature walk around the BWS property! Our property is a bird & butterfly sanctuary and houses a variety of trees, wildflowers, plants, and a pond! This makes for some great wildlife and bird watching and is a plant lovers paradise! I used an app to identify some of the wildflowers currently blooming and here is what you will find here right now! There were so many bees and bugs buzzing all around the flowers; bees and bugs are a big draw for birds as well! Our walking trails are always open for you to explore and go right down to our pond where we get herons, ducks, geese, and commonly see turtles, bullfrogs, and muskrats too! The BWS property is host to many species and this is a great time of year to come check it out!! Stop on out Monday-Saturday from 10-5 AND this Sunday, May 31st from 12-4 and explore our property before or after you shop! Happy birding!
