Did you know......The Birdwatchers Store hosts FREE bird walks the first Saturday of every month (with the exception of specialty walks several times a year)?! We host these walks year round! Martin Carlin, local birder extraordinaire and photographer, leads our walks and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to bird watching and identification! You meet at The Birdwatchers Store by 8:30am and head out to several birding locations in the area! Some common locations are Stoughton Rd, Wolf Creek Narrows Natural Area, Jennings Environmental Education Center, Moraine State Park, and more! These walks are open to all ages and birding experience levels. Martin meets with the group before you head out to decide what locations you will be going based on group needs/abilities and bird migration! Our next FREE bird walk will be this Saturday, September 5th. We do ask that you call to sign up in case of cancellation due to weather. Call 724-794-2473 with any questions or to sign up. We will be hosting a special bird walk on October 10th- announcement coming soon!!! Stop in to The Birdwatchers Store Monday-Saturday from 10-5 just outside of Slippery Rock, PA. Happy birding!

Thank you to everyone who came out for our Live Birds of Prey event at The Birdwatchers Store last night!! Jen, founder of Butler Birder’s Club, brought an American Kestrel and a Screech Owl and they were so tiny and fun to watch and learn about! These birds are ambassadors with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and cannot be released so they help with education and programming. We had almost 80 people come through from 5-7:30 and donated all of the admissions back to Audubon! The amount of support and interest in these events always amazes us and we are so thankful for it!!! Keep your eye out for more events like these in the future. Stop in Monday-Saturday from 10-5 just outside of Slippery Rock, PA to see what we have for you!

This past week, store owner Jody and store customer Vinny, spent several hours at BWS one evening conducting a moth observation! Vinny came in earlier in the day to get everything set up and turned on the lights so that come nightfall, the moths and some other creatures were on the canvases waiting for us to take a look. He used several types of lights including black lights. We had 2 observation areas set up on the trails and we saw quite a few types of moths throughout the evening. We also walked the trails at night with a flashlight and saw caterpillars, ladybugs, beetles, moths, slugs, toads, and tree frogs. We also had several honey bees that came out to check out our black light too. While neither of us are super familiar with the names of the moths we are seeing, we really enjoyed taking photos and looking at what is out there at night! Do any of you recognize or know what type of moths any of the photos are? Stop on in Monday-Saturday from 10-5 to shop, walk the trails, and do some bird watching! We are located just outside of Slippery Rock, PA!

Saturday morning proved to be quite exciting for us here at The Birdwatchers Store! Throughout the morning, 4 of our monarch butterflies hatched out of their chrysalis! We had 3 females and 1 male in the group. I took them home to release them in a beautiful wildflower patch in Mercer County where they can enjoy NY ironweed and goldenrod. We have 2 more chrysalis we are waiting on to hatch out of the first group and we have a whole new group of caterpillars of different sizes munching on milkweed in the enclosure! We are having so much fun with watching them eat, p**p, grow, and change. Thank you so much to our Slippery Rock resident customer, Linda, who has been gracious enough to give us lots of caterpillars and eggs from her milkweed patch so that we can share the joy and education with you all. Stop on in Monday-Saturday from 10-5 to check them out; they are always on display in their enclosure in our viewing room!

We recently had a customer in the Slippery Rock area share some awesome photos with us of a family of green herons who have made her yard and pool area their home this summer! She has had a great time watching them grow and learn how to catch bugs and toads around her yard and pool area! While these birds usually settle near fresh water, they can settle in near any body of water with ample food! They eat a lot of small fish, crayfish, frogs, snails, grasshoppers, snakes, and even small rodents. Unlike blue herons, green herons nest in pairs or very small groups, not colonies. Their nests are commonly in shrubs or small trees at least 5 feet off of the ground. Green herons are much smaller than blue herons and have much shorter legs. We get green herons to our pond here at The Birdwatchers Store most commonly in the early spring and fall seasons. We love when customers share interesting or funny bird photos and stories with us! Stop in to The Birdwatchers Store Monday-Saturday from 10-5 just outside of Slippery Rock, PA!

We had such a wonderful time leading the bird walk at Cobblehaus At The Falls Taproom this past weekend! Our guide, Martin, did a great job of leading the group through the stunning property at Cobblehaus and while we did not see many birds, we saw a lot of mushrooms, ghost pipe flowers, bugs, caterpillars, and got to end the walk at the grand finale, the falls!! We had about 50 people join us and we hope to do this again in the future!! Thank you so much to Cobblehaus for asking us to be a part of this walk and for having such a cool place to spend a Saturday!
