Our Explorers have been busy this summer. It’s not just about learning about emergency services but also helping the community, putting on children related events and helping us with the Annual BBQ. Over the weekend the Explorers helped out at the community rummage sale by pulling the weeds, washing down the building, organizing the clothes, checking out customers and cleaning up at the end of the event. Our community is lucky to have such active Explorers.

Today we supported the Military training at Sweetwater airstrip. We were there in case of a medical or emergency incident. We got to meet some cool people even though it was hot out.

Emergency calls can take their toll on all of us including our families. To help manage the mental, physical and emotional stress we all feel, we take some time with our fire department family to relax on the lake and eat some good food.

When it’s hot out, midway through summer break, some kids know of a cool hangout where they can learn, read, and see other kids. Every year the library here in Smith Valley hosts a library camp and we are blessed to be invited for one of those days. So how do we keep the kids engaged as we educate them on a hot day? We play water games to build skills for carrying as much water as possible in a bucket to fill another bucket to sit in and cool off, shoot a stream of water from the fire hose to hit a target to drench a volunteer. Such a splashing good time.

A message from our volunteer’s president…

Wow, you guys are the BEST! I just want to take this opportunity to thank our AMAZING community for the record attendance and fundraising at our 71st Annual Steak Fry! You guys really showed up (literally and figuratively)! We can’t thank you enough. Our annual steak fry funds our scholarship program for high school seniors, as well as miscellaneous needed items and projects for our volunteers. Without your help, we couldn’t do what we do!

Where do we begin to show our appreciation for all of the generous donors that contributed to our event? From the silent and live auctions to the raffle items, to local business that donated everything from prizes to beverages, community members that donated their time to help put on this epic event, and everything in between. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I’d also like to take this opportunity to make the community aware that we have opened up our scholarships to not just Smith Valley High seniors, but also now to homeschooled and privately schooled Smith Valley senior students, that may or may not be seeking a profession in the fire or medical field. Our community has been so generous to us, we think this is a great way to share that generosity. We look forward to meeting our 2027 applicants next spring and hearing about all of the great things they plan on doing with their lives!

While I’m here, I would like to brag on our Smith Valley Fire volunteers for a moment. I could not be more proud to be a part of such a generous and hardworking group of volunteers. Everyone really worked hard to make the steak fry a success and it showed. Great work team!!!!!

We hope everyone had a positive experience at our event. If you have any suggestions as to how we can improve (because there is always room for improvement), please reach out to us! If you missed it this year and would still like to help out, please click on this link to make your donation…. https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/8L36FQ2EEKBC2

This year’s steak fry was top notch, and it’s going to be a tough act to follow but we will give it everything we’ve got next year! Hope to see you all there!!!

With an abundance of gratitude,
Kristin Anker
