Fortunate to have Battle Born Medevac take time and come to our training. They talked about helicopter safety and loading a patient along with so much other useful information.

Information regarding a fire in the Pine Nut mountain range: There is a 3-5 acre fire burning at a slow rate of spread in the Pine Nut Mountains on BLM land. There is smoke visible in the Pipe Line Canyon area. BLM is utilizing planes, helicopters and a hand crew to fight this fire. Please see photos for location of the fire and utilize the Watchduty app for updates.

Being a volunteer fire department in a small town we get the opportunity to have some non emergency fun and training (practice operating controls with our fire trucks). With the warm temperatures these past few days, we were happy to be able to help the students cool off at Smith Valley Elementary School after they finished their color run. Lots of fun on a hot day.

Congratulations Eric Covarrubias Fonseca for being this year’s recipient of our Annual Smith Valley Volunteer Firefighters Scholarship Fund. Eric received $2,000.00 to pursue a higher education in the Fire Service industry. We all wish you the best in your future education and training. Who could have been a better choice to present the scholarship award than one of our members and Eric’s sister, Tania Covarrubias.

Tania Covarrubias was just recently acknowledged by members of the East Fork Fire Protection District for going above and beyond. On August 6, 2025 East Fork Fire had a structure fire that was potentially going to turn into a wild land fire. Tania happen to be in the area and witnessed the event. She immediately jumped into action. She put her training and experience to work and volunteered to assist. Tania was able to secure a supply line to a hydrant which aided in containing the fire. Thank you, Tania for thinking outside the box and assisting our neighbors.
