Unfortunately, Rob Randall and I were not successful in this election. We worked hard to convince the town that our students deserve school committee members who are experienced in education, credentialed, devoid of special interests, and who will serve the needs of all students. The town has chosen to go a different direction. We are both grateful to all those who supported our campaign. I want to especially thank Hannah, Cameron, and Jillian who provided so much support.

It has been a true honor and privilege to serve Smithfield Public Schools! The makeup of the school committee may change from election to election but what remains a constant is our incredible staff who go above and beyond to help our students achieve success and feel included. They have demonstrated incredible adaptiveness, innovation, and resilience during the past four years.

Our pre-K-12 students are also amazing! It has been wonderful to see them grow through the engaging programs offered by each school. There are many things I am proud of as I reflect on my term.

✅I am proud to have always put the needs of our students first

✅I am proud to have helped keep our schools open during an unprecedented pandemic

✅I am proud to have been open-minded and responsive to community members regardless of their position on issues

✅I am proud to have advocated for increased funding, capital improvements, and staffing

✅I am proud to have treated our staff as experienced professionals

✅I am proud to have always promoted unity over division; inclusion over exclusion.

✅I am proud to have always made research-based decisions

✅I am most proud to have defended our most vulnerable students when their very existence was marginalized and attacked.

I have always been inspired by a quote from my hero John Lewis. “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up. You have to say something; you have to do something.”

It was my honor to resist my opponent's attempt to deny students access to carefully vetted age-appropriate books from our school libraries that represented marginalized groups such as women and people of color. Intellectual curiosity and self-discovery are the cornerstones of education. It is essential that all students can access resources in our libraries that reflect who they are.

It was my greatest honor to have successfully resisted changes to our transgender policy that would have discriminated against students based on their gender identity and would have also required the staff to out grades 6-12 students who revealed their sexuality. The advice of experts, reputable research, and best practices were continually dismissed during this months-long attempt at revising the policy. The worst part of the experience was the public discussion that perpetuated inaccurate information and hateful speech that denigrated our students treating them like second-class citizens.

I am concerned with the direction the school committee may take our district based on their previous rhetoric. I hope that the new school committee sets aside political ideology and stays true to its oath to promote the success of ALL students regardless of gender, gender identity, sexuality, race, religion, nationality, or disability. All students deserve to feel safe and included in our schools.

Rob Randall and I ask for your support at the polls! 🗳
One of the most consequential elections for our town will be the school committee. There are currently four candidates vying for election in November. School committee members play a critical role in shaping the core values of the district. Do you know each candidate’s core values?

✅️Rob Randall and I believe that we should always put the interest of students first

✅️We support ALL students. Not some, not most, but ALL students regardless of gender, race, socioeconomic status, sexuality, religion, or disability.

✅️Listening, responding, considering different viewpoints, carefully researching issues, and collaborating is essential.

✅️We support our professional staff and believe that they are a true asset to the community

✅️Acting with civility, kindness, professionalism is essential

We would be truly honored to have your support at the polls!

Do you have what it takes...to hold a sign?

We are looking for volunteers to hold signs at our 6 polling locations on election day.

Can you spare 1 hour (or 2!) between 7AM-6PM? No salesmanship needed. You just need to sit or stand with a sign. We are also happy to have the help of any teenagers looking to get involved. Bring a friend to keep you company! Please message Hannah or I if you are willing to help. Thank you!

The Observer Candidate Profile
Caisse, 42, has lived in Smithfield for 10 years with his wife, Hannah, and two children, Cameron and Jillian.

Caisse said his professional career is dedicated to helping students succeed. Smithfield schools have made “great strides” in the past four years, and he is proud to be a part of the transformational effort to enhance public education in Smithfield, and he wishes to continue this important work, he said.

“Serving on the School Committee has allowed me to utilize my experience to work collaboratively with our district personnel to ensure that a high-quality education is provided to all students in Smithfield,” he said.

Caisse said the challenges the school system faces grow more complex every year. He had 21 years of experience as a public school teacher and a stated that every decision he has made was research-based, fully informed by professional staff, and put the well-being of students first.

"Now, more than ever, Smithfield needs a School Committee member with extensive experience in public education who has a proven record of always putting the needs of students first,” he said.

Caisse said he has utilized his experience throughout his term to advocate for staffing, resources, and programs to help enhance the quality of education in Smithfield.

'I will continue to do if re-elected," he said.

According to Caisse, students deserve pre-K through 12 state-of-the-art learning facilities, and the school committee needs to continue to work with the Town Council to invest in the middle and high school classrooms. He said schools must also continue expanding the CTE opportunities to ensure all students achieve post-secondary success.

"We also need to remain focused on raising student achievement by continuing to develop innovative curriculum, programs, and interventions that engage all students,” he said.

Caisse was on the Educator Contract Negotiations Team, the Old County Road Elementary School Principal Hiring Committee, the SHS Principal Hiring Committee, the Superintendent Hiring Committee, and has worked as a LaPerche LEAP instructor, on the Smithfield Historic Preservation Commission, and as a Troop 1 Greenville Scout volunteer.
