The FBI is offering a reward up to $50,000 for information to locate and capture Michael Timothy Puckett. This adds to the $10,000 already being offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for a combined reward up to $60,000.

FBI Richmond is assisting the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshals, the Virginia State Police, and multiple local and state agencies in a manhunt for Puckett, who is facing an Aggravated Murder charge in Virginia.

Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a welfare check at Puckett's home on Fancy Gap Highway on Friday at approximately 9:30 p.m. When they arrived and made contact, authorities said Puckett opened fire, shooting both deputies, killing one deputy and injuring the second. He then fled the scene.

We are asking the public to check surveillance video or trail/hunting camera images to assist in real-time tracking of the fugitive. We also ask home and business owners to lock your vehicles, close your garage doors, lock up your sheds and do not leave anything outside Puckett could use to assist him to elude capture. Call 911 if you see Puckett.

Yesterday, members of the Smithfield Police Department proudly received the Law Enforcement Torch Run Flame of Hope from the Suffolk Police Department and the Suffolk Virginia Sheriff's Office in support of Special Olympics Virginia.

The torch was passed to our team in preparation for Monday's run, when Smithfield officers and fellow Law Enforcement will carry the Flame of Hope through our community. This annual tradition represents law enforcement's commitment to supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities and helping raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics.

On Monday, June 1, our team will run approximately 5 miles from Sherwin-Williams to the Luter Sports Complex, traveling along South Church Street and Main Street.

If you see our runners and support vehicles along the route, please give them a wave and help us cheer on this incredible cause!

Together, we run for inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity for all.

๐Ÿšจ SCAM ALERT โ€“ DO NOT FALL FOR THIS ๐Ÿšจ

The Smithfield Police Department has been made aware of fraudulent โ€œFinal Enforcement Noticeโ€ letters circulating that claim to be from the Commonwealth of Virginia Traffic Division.

โ— THIS IS A SCAM.

These notices are designed to scare you into making immediate payment using QR codes or unofficial payment systems.

Hereโ€™s how you can tell itโ€™s fake:
๐Ÿ”ด Virginia courts do NOT send threats like this demanding immediate payment via QR codes
๐Ÿ”ด Official court notices will come through verified channels, not generic enforcement letters
๐Ÿ”ด Language like โ€œFINAL ENFORCEMENT NOTICEโ€ and โ€œNO FURTHER WARNINGโ€ is meant to create panic
๐Ÿ”ด Payment requests should ONLY be made through official court websites or in person

โš ๏ธ What you should do:
โ€ข Do NOT scan the QR code
โ€ข Do NOT send money
โ€ข Do NOT provide personal information
โ€ข Verify any court-related issue directly through the Virginia court system or by contacting your local court

๐Ÿ’ก Reminder: Scammers rely on urgency and fear. Always slow down, verify, and when in doubtโ€”call us.

Federal Jury Convicts Suspect in Multi-Jurisdictional Bank Robbery Series

A federal jury has convicted Tyrone Jefferson Perry Jr. on multiple charges, including bank robbery, bank robbery with a dangerous weapon, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The conviction follows a series of four bank robberies that occurred between February and March 2025 across the Hampton Roads region. The second robbery in this series occurred in the Town of Smithfield and was actively investigated by the Smithfield Police Department.

Through coordinated investigative efforts, law enforcement determined that Jefferson used a stolen vehicle and license plates obtained from a rental car company where he was employed. During the robberies, Jefferson approached bank tellers, demanded money, and brandished a firearm in multiple incidents.

The Smithfield Police Department worked closely with the FBI - Norfolk, Newport News Police Department, Henrico County Police, and the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office to identify and apprehend Jefferson. Information developed during the Smithfield investigation played a key role in connecting the series of robberies across multiple jurisdictions.

This case is a strong example of what can be accomplished when local and federal law enforcement agencies work together. Our officers and investigators remain committed to protecting our community and ensuring those who commit violent crimes are held accountable.

Jefferson, who has multiple prior felony convictions, faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 21 years and up to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for July 23, 2026.

A special thank you to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mack Coleman and Alyson C. Yates for prosecuting this case.

The Smithfield Police Department thanks all partner agencies for their collaboration and dedication throughout this investigation.
