I have attached a schedule for a CERT Class sponsored by Smithfield City Starting Nov 7th . We are looking for individuals that would be willing to be an affiliated CERT volunteer for Smithfield.

Affiliation

To become an affiliated member of Smithfield CERT you must:

Currently live in Smithfield City. (We will open classes later for anyone interested but for now we are looking to build our team).
Successfully complete an application, pass a criminal background check, and be accepted as a Smithfield City CERT volunteer.
Complete all the CERT basic training coursework and obtain a Smithfield City CERT identification card.
Regularly meet (Quarterly) and train (full scale exercise) at least yearly with the Smithfield CERT instructors for continued education.

Recruitment and Teambuilding

Smithfield Fire Department will advertise the CERT Program using existing social media, Civic Ready, and church groups to attract community volunteers.

Smithfield City CERT will incorporate team-building activities and events during initial training, drills and exercises and promote a sense of camaraderie and belonging among team members. So please come make a difference in our disaster preparedness.

The CERT program will be managed by the Smithfield Fire Department. We are fast tracking this first class a bit. So, if anyone is interested please e-mail Chief Peterson at [email protected] and I will send you an application the first of next week.

Please share this with anyone you can!

Each October we pause to remember the Great Chicago Fire of October 8,1871 and kick off Fire Prevention Week where we re-dedicate ourselves to eliminating fire hazards, practicing Home Fire Safety Drills, and checking our smoke detectors.

That conflagration killed around 300 people and burned 17,000 structures.

A lesser-known fire occurred that very same day October 8, 1871, in northeastern Wisconsin, the Peshtigo Fire. The deadliest fire in American History. The death toll is estimated between 1500 and 2500.

I cannot imagine those two fires on the same day in the same area of the country.

Sadly, we still see these large-scale fires today. As we recall these events of 1871 and those as recent as this year, I urge everyone to never underestimate the destructive power of fire.

Please, check your homes for hazards, make sure safety devices work at home and at work.

Have a “Fire Safe” Holiday Season!
