On the evening of March 6, 2026, Smithfield Fire & Rescue responded to a residential structure fire in our community.
Upon arrival, crews worked quickly with limited manpower to bring the fire under control and ensure the safety of all occupants. We are grateful to report that all residents were able to safely exit the home.
Unfortunately, the family has suffered a total loss. A few cats remain unaccounted for, and one has been confirmed deceased. The members of Smithfield Fire & Rescue extend our sincere condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time.
Smithfield Fire & Rescue would also like to recognize and thank the mutual aid departments that responded and assisted on scene. Their rapid response, professionalism, and teamwork were instrumental in bringing this incident under control.
We extend our appreciation to the following departments for their support:

Belgrade Fire & Rescue Association - Maine
Sidney Maine Fire-Rescue

Delta Ambulance
We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Mike Obert of DMO Landscaping for responding with an excavator and assisting crews on scene.
Incidents like this remind us that emergency response is truly a team effort. We are grateful for the strong mutual aid partnerships and community members who step up to help keep our communities safe.
Our thoughts remain with the family affected by this devastating loss.
