The SHPC is excited to begin developing a strategic plan to preserve and repurpose the Allenville Mill Storehouse. This building represents the last vestige of the original mill complex built in 1813. Please complete this www.smithfieldri.gov/AllenvilleSurvey to share your thoughts on its future use. Join us for the first public tour of the amazing building on Saturday, March 14th, from 10AM-2PM (drop-in event).
Historical Significance
Constructed in 1813 by Allenville founder Philip Allen, the Allenville Mill Storehouse is the sole remaining building from the original Allenville Mill complex (1813–1902) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also among the few surviving mill storehouses from the hundreds that once existed throughout Rhode Island during the nineteenth century.
Over its long history, the building has served a variety of functions, including as a mill storehouse, private residence, the Esmond Post Office, a nursing unit operated by the Smithfield Public Health League, and later as part of the Bromberg family’s warehouse and office operations associated with Benny’s.
In 2021, the Bromberg family donated the property to the Town with the understanding that it would be used for “educational, recreational, and/or civic purposes” while maintaining the historic integrity of the building.
