Recently, the members of the department participated in a Smoke Alarm Canvas where neighborhoods in East Smithfield around Mill and Blount Street and West Smithfield around Pace and Whitley Streets were visited. During the canvas, a total of 18 smoke alarms were installed while Engine Companies responded to multiple emergency incidents. We are already in the process of replenishing our smoke alarm supply. If you would like to partner with our department to help us provide more alarms to the community, please contact the Smithfield Fire Marshal’s Office. If you or your family members own your home and are in need of a smoke alarm or would like to have your alarm checked, please give us a call and we would be happy assist you. It is important to remember that functioning smoke alarms save lives.

🚨🚨DOWNTOWN TRAFFIC ALERT

UPDATE (2:05pm) - Piedmont Natural Gas has stopped the leaked and will be making repairs for a little while longer. However, we will be clearing the scene shortly and reopening the road. Thank you for your patience.

The Smithfield, NC Police Department and Smithfield Fire Department are assisting with a natural gas leak on the 400 block of Second Street between Riverside and Davis. Please avoid Second Street and this area if at all possible. Crews are on site and we expect the closure to last a couple of hours.

Please note that this temporary road closure will now take place THURSDAY.

Heads up, Smithfield — brief road closure tomorrow afternoon:

THURSDAY at 2:00 p.m., South Brightleaf Boulevard will be temporarily closed between Packing Plant Road and the bridge to allow contractors to safely complete a rock blast as part of construction for a new wastewater pump station (2878 S. Brightleaf Blvd.).

What to expect:
- A single, controlled blast lasting about 15 seconds
-Minimal impact expected to surrounding properties
-The road closure should last approximately 5 minutes

Smithfield Police Department will assist with traffic control, and a fire engine will be on site as a safety precaution.

We appreciate your patience as we complete this important infrastructure project. Please plan for a brief delay in this area around 2:00 p.m. THURSDAY..
