Little Church of Smithtown Landing A small, historic church at Smithtown Landing. At the time, the congregation at Smithtown Landing attracted parishioners through lively evangelical messages.

The deed was signed in 1834, when most of the residents of Smithtown were farmers or seafarers. As is still true today, the doors of the church were open to all. Sixty community members can fit snugly within its walls, where men traditionally sat on the left side and women on the right. The church goes by many names: S

mithtown Landing Church, The Church at the Landing, and most affectionately as The Little Church in The Woods. Here one can find more than a few notable names in the church’s small graveyard. Most of its original founders are buried here, including members of the Darling and Blydenburgh families. The church’s weekly services ended sometime in the 1950’s and still many Smithtown residents warmly recall attending them. Most smile in remembrance of the Christmas services’ where chocolate candies and tangerines (an uncommon delicacy) were handed out to the neighborhood children. Presently, the church holds biannual services, every fall and winter and is run by the Landing Ladies Auxiliary, a volunteer group of local community members dedicating to preserving this lovely little piece of Smithtown history.

Tomorrow, the Smithtown Landing Methodist Church will take part in the ringing of the bells ceremony at 11am, to take part in the Town of Smithtown 250TH celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

A trip to check on the church resulted in a nice surprise. A random bagpipes player practicing in the graveyard. So I had him play Amazing Grace by out Revolutionary marker.
