Congratulations to dispatcher #46 Michael Gianmugnai after 28 years of dedicated service to The Smithtown Fire Rescue Communications Division.

Today, Michael, our senior man, had his final sign off and final walk out alongside family, co-workers, and friends.

Throughout his career, Michael played a major role in shaping the next generation of dispatchers, spending years training new hires and setting the standard in the room. He was on the job when the division handled five departments, served as a past union president, and worked through some of the most demanding periods in recent history, including Hurricane Sandy and the COVID-19 pandemic.

A career defined by experience, leadership, and commitment to the job.

Enjoy your retirement Mike!

🚨 BLIZZARD WARNING – SMITHTOWN AREA 🚨

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for Northwest Suffolk from Sunday morning through Monday evening.

Forecast details:
• 13–18 inches of snow possible, with locally higher amounts
• Wind gusts up to 55 mph
• Whiteout conditions at times
• Travel becoming extremely dangerous, especially Sunday night into Monday
• Risk of downed trees and scattered power outages

This is not just snowfall. Heavy accumulation combined with strong winds will create blowing and drifting snow, near-zero visibility, and hazardous road conditions.

Safety Reminders:
• Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary
• If you must drive, carry a winter emergency kit and keep your fuel tank full
• If stranded, stay with your vehicle and clear the exhaust pipe
• Charge phones and essential devices now
• Secure outdoor items that can become airborne
• Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable
• Check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance

If you reside within the Smithtown, Kings Park, or Hauppauge Fire District, report any fire or medical emergency directly to 631-265-1500.

Calling this number connects you straight to the dispatch center and helps avoid potential delays in the 911 system. The faster we receive the information, the faster help is on the way.

We will continue to monitor conditions. Stay prepared. Stay off the roads if you can.

Earlier today, dispatch staff from Smithtown Fire Rescue 4-2-0 participated in field operations during the funeral services for Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa at St. Patrick’s Church in Smithtown.

The services were attended by more than 1,000 police officers from across the greater New York metropolitan area. Smithtown Fire Rescue dispatch personnel assisted with coordinating communications and documentation for EMS coverage involving multiple Smithtown Fire Department EMS units, as well as crews from Kings Park Fire Department, CVAC, CIHVAC, St. James Fire Department, and Nissequogue Fire Department.

Dispatch personnel staffed a Suffolk County FRES Command Post vehicle alongside department command staff, division coordinators, and FRES staff. Throughout the day, field dispatch staff ensured proper documentation of all ICS paperwork while operating under the department’s Event Action Plan (EAP).

While there was only one call for assistance on the property during the funeral, the operation provided a valuable refresher in planning, coordination, and ex*****on for a large-scale event.

The Office of Smithtown Fire Rescue extends its deepest condolences to Officer Espinosa’s family, friends, and fellow members of the Nassau County Police Department. Her dedication and service will not be forgotten.

While most people are still settling into the new year, our dispatchers are keeping busy. The office has already handled four working fires in the opening weeks of 2026.

The first fire occurred within the Smithtown Fire District on January 7, 2026, at 12:29 p.m., on South Pond Lane, involving a garage fire in a condominium complex. The second fire took place within the Kings Park Fire District on January 11, 2026, at 112 Broadview Avenue, involving a fire in a private dwelling.

Just two days later, on January 13, 2026, at 11:11 a.m., dispatchers again activated the Kings Park Fire Department for a working residential structure fire on Winnecomac Circle involving a fire in the attic.

The fourth working fire occurred today, January 26, 2026, within the Smithtown Fire District, where dispatchers handled a basement fire in a private dwelling.

This is what the job looks like behind the scenes, and we are just getting started.
