Today, members of Paws of War visited the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department with their service dog, Riley, to speak with residents about the organization’s work supporting veterans and first responders. Riley enjoyed meeting and getting pets from residents, who were able to learn about all the critical work and services provided by the humans and dogs alike at Paws of War in Nesconset.

From training and placing service dogs to operating a no-cost mobile veterinary clinic, Paws of War supports veterans and service members through a wide range of assistance and rescue programs both locally and abroad. For example just recently, Paws of War was able to take in 10 of the 1500 beagles who were rescued from labratory testing. As summer begins and families head to pools, beaches, and boats, it’s important to keep water safety top of mind. Children between the ages of 1 & 4 are at the highest risk for drowning, so active supervision and proper safety precautions are especially important around the water.
Many water-related accidents are preventable, and residents are encouraged to take simple but critical safety measures. Things such as constant supervision, secure pool barriers, approved life jackets, and learning CPR are crucial to combat any water-related accident.
