Please join us on Friday, September 11. The ceremony will begin at 8:00 a.m. at City Hall. At 9:05 a.m., our Smyrna First Responders will take part in our annual memorial run through downtown Smyrna. Please come out and support in remembrance of September 11th, 2001.

Twenty-five years after Sept. 11, 2001, Smyrna’s first responders will honor those who died by coming together in remembrance and continuing the spirit of service that followed the attacks.

A public ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Smyrna City Hall. At 9:05 a.m., local first responders will take part in a memorial run through downtown Smyrna. A nearby flag display representing the Twin Towers will remain in place through Sunday, Sept. 13, giving residents additional time to visit and reflect.

The Smyrna Public Safety Foundation is also offering commemorative challenge coins for a $25 donation. Proceeds will support Smyrna first responders.

As part of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s (GOHS) “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, the Smyrna Police Department Special Operations Division—alongside our partners with the Georgia Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE)—conducted a traffic safety checkpoint.



The checkpoint, along Windy Hill Rd, began at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, and concluded at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 27. The following enforcement actions were taken:



Smyrna Police Department:

• 41 citations issued
• 11 arrests:

4 for DUI
6 for driving while unlicensed
1 for driving while license suspended
• 7 vehicles impounded
• 5 K-9 deployments



Georgia Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement:

• 20 vehicle inspections conducted
• 16 citations issued
• 15 warnings issued
• 4 vehicles impounded
• 1 driver placed out of service



We would also like to thank Law Enforcement Medical Services (LEMS) and Barrow Wrecker Service for their assistance and support throughout the operation.

Please avoid the area of Windy Hill Road SE near the intersection of Village Parkway SE due to a heavy police presence investigating a serious-injury vehicle accident.

Expect delays and possible detours. Please use alternate routes if possible.

Be alert, drive safe and follow all traffic instructions from law enforcement.

UPDATE: CASE CLOSED

Thanks to the public’s assistance, we were able to identify the suspect in our road rage incident from June 2026.

A warrant was taken for Freddrick Hammonds on August 14, 2026. He is charged with one count of Aggravated Battery, Felony.

The Smyrna Police Department is requesting the public's assistance in identifying an individual involved in a road rage incident that occurred on June 27, 2026.

On that date, the occupants of two vehicles became involved in a traffic dispute while traveling through Smyrna. A driver in his 50s noticed the other vehicle following him after he turned off the main roadway. He stopped and exited his vehicle to speak with the occupants of the other vehicle. The encounter escalated into a physical altercation, during which the victim was struck multiple times with a handgun.

Smyrna Police have identified the driver of the suspect vehicle as 18-year-old Hayle Kirkpatrick, who has been charged with Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers in connection with the investigation.

Investigators are now seeking to identify the male passenger seen in the attached video and photograph.

Empowering women through education, awareness, and confidence.

Yesterday, the Smyrna Police Department had the pleasure of hosting a Women's Self-Defense Class for an incredible group of strong and empowered women. Opportunities like these allow us to give back to our community by providing practical skills, increasing awareness, and building confidence.

Why is self-defense training so important?
-1 in 3 women will experience sexual violence during their lifetime.
-1 in 4 women will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18.
-On average, a sexual assault occurs every two minutes in the United States.

While we hope these skills are never needed, being prepared can help increase confidence, improve personal safety, and provide valuable tools for responding to dangerous situations.

It is that time again!!!!

Our next FREE women’s self-defense class will be held in a few weeks! The class consists of four days, August 10th, 11th, 17th and the 18th from 6pm to 9pm each night.

Participants must commit to all four classes. This class is for females only and you must be at least 13 years old, juveniles accompanied by an adult.

If you are interested or have questions, please email the lead instructor for this class, Andrea Boyes, at [email protected].

You can even sign up with your daughter and/or some girlfriends to make it more fun! Again, this class is FREE and will fill up quickly.
