Would you like to know if there is lead in your soil at home? As part of our GA Arbor Day activities, GAA & SoilSHOP are offering free lead testing. Soil can become contaminated with harmful metals, and screening your soil can help determine your family's lead exposure. Come to Atlanta on Fri., Feb. 20, 2-6PM, and bring a sample of your soil. https://www.georgiaarborist.org/events/free-soil-testing-georgia-arbor-day

The program includes the planting of new, site-appropriate trees. APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN! To be considered for this award, you must meet certain criteria and follow a specific application process (available on our website). https://www.georgiaarborist.org/trap

Give yourself (and the environment!) the gift of a free front yard tree this holiday season! City residents can apply to have up to two native trees planted in their front yard at no cost. The Front Yard Tree Program is a partnership between the City of Smyrna and Trees Atlanta that helps maintain and expand the urban tree canopy. Available trees include white oak, willow oak, tulip poplar, bald cypress, and sycamore. You must be a resident of Smyrna (or another participating city) to qualify.

Whether you volunteered to plant trees with a local nonprofit, or added trees to your yard, or have spent your days educating others on the importance of trees, know that you've made a giant sequoia-sized difference, not just on the day you did it, but every day after that.

The benefits of trees are felt year after year, generation after generation. Cleaner air, richer soil, healthy food, a calming environment, wildlife habitat β€” the list is seemingly endless. The more trees we have, the stronger our natural future becomes.

As we move into spring and begin to garden and prepare our yards for summer, the Smyrna Tree Board would like to remind Smyrna residents about the Tree Removal Permit process. Please see below link for the permit information sheet for a refresher.

Please also remember to manage vine growth on your trees to assure they are not being choked by the vines.

Thank you!

TREES – before you cut down a tree in the City of Smyrna, please be aware that rules and updated/new rules apply as of December 16, 2019. In general, should you wish to remove a tree at or over 24 inches in diameter (breast height), rules apply. The ordinance applies to residential properties as well as others. For Tree Removal Permits, please send an email to Caitlin Crowe at [email protected]. While we are all operating under social distancing, please contact the Community Development on this topic through this method.

The purpose of the TREE CONSERVATION AND REPLACEMENT Article (Article II) is to provide standards for the conservation and replacement of trees, to provide standards for the protection of trees during construction whenever possible in order to enhance the city, and to provide education to the community about the value and best management practices of community forest management. Please visit the ordinance link and read thoroughly for all information, including exemptions that may apply. Again, questions and requests for permits should be sent to [email protected] /
