Citizens' Hose Company No. 1 Inc. of Smyrna, DE

The Citizens' Hose Company No. 1 Inc. serves as the Smyrna Fire Company, which protects the community of Smyrna, DE. Manley, Jr. and Fire Chief Michael J. O'Neill.

The Citizens' Hose Company was founded on January 6, 1886. For over 135 years, the Citizens' Hose Company has prided itself with protecting the community of Smyrna as a completely 100% volunteer fire company. The Citizens' Hose Company handles a wide variety of calls each year and is currently staffed with the following apparatus:

Join us for our Annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony on Friday, September 11th, in front of our Station at 7:00pm. This year's guest speaker will be AJ Schall, Director of Delaware Emergency Management Agency and Past Chief of Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company. Gather together with members of the community, as we honor and remember the true American heroes from that tragic day 25 years ago.

On this day, we remember H. Thomas "Tommy" Tucker (pictured center), the only Line of Duty Death in the history of the Citizens' Hose Company. On August 22, 1982, Tommy tragically fell from the jump seat area of Engine 44-2 while responding to a gas leak, and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on August 26, 1982. Although his time in our Company was all too short, Tommy embodied what it meant to be a true community servant and firefighter, and his legacy lives on today. In his 3-1/2 years in the Company, Tommy responded to 800 of 1,007 alarms, and also served as an Ambulance Attendant with American Legion Ambulance Service Station 64 Inc. Each year, the company honors one member with the H. Thomas Tucker Firefighter of the Year award for their hard work and dedication, in the honor of Tommy.

On August 22, 1982, at 1245 hours, the Citizens' Hose Company was dispatched for a Gas Leak Inside the Structure at Duck Creek Trailer Park. While responding, Firefighter H. Thomas Tucker fell from the Chief's Side Jump Seat at the intersection of East Commerce Street and Route 13, and never regained consciousness, passing on August 26, 1982. This morning, under cloudy skies, on the 44th Year of his passing, the Company was able to place and dedicate a commemorative marker in his honor. We would like to thank our Brothers and Sisters from American Legion Ambulance Service Station 64 Inc. and Clayton Fire Company NO.1 Inc. for standing beside us in solidarity, as we unveiled the memorial. This will become a memorial monument that is built out in the coming weeks, to honor Tommy's dedication and service. We would like to extend a very heartfelt and sincere thank you to the Collett Family of Collett and Sons Welding & Mfg. Inc, the Cassidy Family of Cassidy Painting, Inc., and John Morgan of JPM Contracting, as well as those additional members of our community, for helping to create this memorial.

At 1749 hours, the CHC, Clayton Fire Company NO.1 Inc., Leipsic Vol. Fire Company, American Legion Ambulance Service Station 64 Inc., and Kent County Department of Public Safety Paramedics were dispatched to a Working House Fire in the 500 Block of Lake Drive West; neighbors reported fire from the roof. The Crews from Engine 3 and Ladder 44, and half of Tower 45, located the fire in a roof void space above the first floor, while the other half of Tower 45 ventilated the roof. Crews were able to suppress the fire with minor extension. Hartly Volunteer Fire Company filled the rest of the box and Community Fire Company of Millington Inc provided standby coverage for the Smyrna - Clayton fire districts. The fire is under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office.
