Hancock County Historical Society

Hancock County Historical Society Hancock County Historical & Genealogical Society is a great place to find info about Hancock County and its people ex: family, stories, and Melungeon info.

The Hancock County Historical & Genealogical Society was founded in 1986 and is located in Sneedville Tennessee. We have information on several families who were residents of Hancock County of which many still have relatives that reside in the county , we also have many local stories and pictures that have been submitted to the society, information on the Melungeon history, a museum filled with l

ots of interesting archives and a great selection of books to purchase for reading pleasure or for research purposes. The building where HCHGS is located, is in fact a historical landmark itself. Around here, it is commonly called "the old jail." The 'old jail' was established in 1860 and was used up until the new jail opened its doors , which was in 1986. The old jail was not equipped with the modern conveniences that todays jails currently have. There is so much history in this old building and if these walls could talk, oh the stories they would tell! The sheriff and his family would live in the lower portion of the jail and his wife would usually do the cooking and washing for the inmates. We have a book for sale written by a former sheriffs daughter about her stories of life lived in this old jail. We also do tours of the facility.
