We are so excited for a variety of projects planned for August 21st and we need volunteers to help us improve our campus. Hope you can make it!

The first day back to school is in less than a month - let's band together and welcome back students and staff with a sparkling clean campus!

Tasks will vary and may include yard work, painting, putting a design on the chalkboard or assisting teachers that may want help setting up their classrooms. Task signup will take place in-person at the event.

We are requesting no young children at this event - middle school age or older are ok!

Juneteenth and How To Celebrate

by Sabrina Howard | Appetite for Change

Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday holds great importance and meaning for African Americans and the nation as a whole. Today, let’s explore the origins of Juneteenth, why it’s so important, and some meaningful ways to celebrate this powerfully significant day.

What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is the anniversary of the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed the enslaved African Americans that they were free. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had legally declared their freedom. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the long struggle for freedom and the momentous milestones achieved by the African American community.

Why Is Juneteenth Important?
Juneteenth is an incredibly impactful and much-needed commemoration for many reasons. To name a few, it:

Marks the end of slavery in the United States, a dark chapter in American history

Celebrates African American heritage, culture, and achievements

Serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice

Provides an opportunity for all Americans to learn about the history of African Americans and acknowledge their contributions to the nation

How To Celebrate Juneteenth
There are many ways to take part in celebration, action, and advocacy when June 19th rolls around. To commemorate Juneteenth, you can:
Educate yourself and others: Learn about the history of Juneteenth, African American culture, and the ongoing fight for civil rights. This includes current and important issues like environmental racism and food justice. Share this knowledge with family, friends, and community members.

Attend local events: Many cities and towns host Juneteenth celebrations, including parades, festivals, and educational events. Participate in these events to show your support and learn from others.

Support Black-owned businesses: Use Juneteenth as an opportunity to support Black-owned businesses in your community and online.

Engage in dialogue: Encourage open and honest conversations about race, privilege, and the continued fight for equality in the United States.

Celebrate African American culture: Enjoy traditional foods, music, and art to honor and appreciate African American heritage.

By understanding the significance of Juneteenth and finding meaningful ways to celebrate, we can contribute to the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice for all.

Ramadan is March 10 - April 9. The holiday is the most sacred month in the Islam culture. Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, which marks important holidays and events for Muslims (people who practice Islam). During Ramadan people fast, or refrain from eating and drinking, while it’s light outside. Once the sun sets, families meet for big meals that may include stew, rice, dates, lentils, and more. People also have a morning meal before the sun rises.

For the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who observe Ramadan, the month is a time to focus on their faith and also perform generous acts. People raise money and donate supplies to help others in need. And many fast to remind themselves about those in the world who don’t have enough to eat.

March is Women’s History Month

March marks Women’s History Month, an honorary observance designated by Congress to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women throughout history and today.

Among the events honoring women in their consequential fight for visibility and equality is International Women's Day on March 8, which is observed around the world with marches and demonstrations.
