Central Emerson Elementary

Central Emerson Elementary Welcome to Central Emerson Elementary, home of the Tigers! We are located in the heart of the City of Snohomish and are part of the Snohomish School District.

Our teachers, support staff and parents work together to help every student become the best they can be in a safe, friendly, fun community. The Central campus has about 200 kindergarten through 2nd graders, and the Emerson campus has about 300 3rd through 6th graders. Our students will attend Centennial Middle School in 7th and 8th grade and Snohomish High School in grades 9 though 12.

Meet Rebecca Dickenson, a proud volunteer at Central Emerson Elementary!

“Our school community has been incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated grandparent volunteer. Over the years, she has generously shared her time and talents in ways that have brought joy and connection to our students. From delighting children with her face painting at last year’s field day to creating the stunning mural outside the library this year, her contributions have left a lasting impact. The mural—featuring our Tiger mascot surrounded by vibrant jungle friends—is a true gift to our school. She devoted countless evenings and weekends to bring it to life, and our students loved watching each new detail unfold throughout the year. We are deeply grateful for her creativity, commitment, and the heart she brings to our community.”- Central Emerson Elementary

• What is your role/title at the school you volunteer with? Parent, now grandparent.

• How long have you been volunteering in Snohomish School District schools and what got you started with volunteering? I began volunteering at Emerson Elementary & Snohomish Schools when my kids and I moved here in 1993. I had formerly worked as a reading teacher and pre-school teacher for Everett and Mukilteo school districts; working with kids in that setting just felt right. I also found it a great way to connect with my kids and be aware of whom and what they were talking about, when they came home and shared their day with me. Originally, I began as an elementary art docent and then volunteered for other activities such as drawing sessions, pottery throwing and all kinds of field trip adventures until my 3 kids graduated from Snohomish High. Now 4 out of 5 of my grandchildren attend Snohomish schools.

• Do you have any students/children in the district? Yes, 4 grandsons- 7th- 4th -3rd- and 1st grades

• What kinds of activities or responsibilities do you take on during your time volunteering in school/ What does your time volunteering in the school typically look like? Just now I am painting a large mural for the new K-1 wing at Emerson- but have visited my grandsons' classes for art /drawing sessions and sharing my picture books (which I author and illustrate. I also have helped in chaperoning many field trips- Children's Museum/ pumpkin patch etc.

• What’s your favorite thing about volunteering in the school? I love the kids! I love their happy energy, their curious minds, and sweet faces. I enjoy bringing something new to them through art.

• Anything you’d like to add? I strongly believe there should be more funding for ARTS in schools! It's such an important means of expression and a rewarding creative outlet for students and all throughout life!

Thank you, Rebecca, for all that you do!

Special thanks to children's author and illustrator Jessixa Bagley for visiting our school campuses today!

Jessixa spent the day with us encouraging students to pursue their passions and sharing how to be better writers and illustrators. We heard about how she is drawn to animals and emotional themes inspired by her own experiences. She shared with students how in our writing and drawing we might be inspired by our family, our favorite song, or perhaps a favorite pet. She also did a drawing demonstration that helped students connect with their own personal inspirations.

You can learn more about Jessixa at www.jessixa.com. Thanks Jessixa for a great day!
