Since returning home this morning, I have received messages from several different people asking whether the budget passed with the proposed tax rate reduction. The proposed 2026-2027 budget ordinance was removed from the agenda following closed session.

The best way we can honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice is to live lives worthy of their service and sacrifice.

Memorial Day is a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy every day were secured by brave men and women who answered the call to serve our nation with courage, honor, and selflessness. Their legacy is not only found in history books or memorials, but in the responsibility each of us carries to cherish and protect the freedoms they fought to defend.

Rep. John Bell recently highlighted that the NC House approved two constitutional amendments for November’s ballot, giving voters the opportunity to decide on greater taxpayer protections for property and income taxes.
These measures promote fiscal responsibility, protect hardworking North Carolinians from excessive tax hikes, and put commonsense guardrails in place to safeguard family budgets.

This is exactly what Commissioner Ray Johnson and I voted for when we voted NO on the county’s resolution opposing the state’s efforts. We stood with taxpayers by opposing that resolution.

This morning along Burrellfield Road, I saw piles of trash illegally dumped on the side of the road. Scenes like this are disappointing because Greene County is a place we all take pride in calling home.

Normally I would stop and pick it up myself and take it to the trash site or landfill, but I do not have my trailer with me and this is too much for one small car.

Keeping our county clean and beautiful is everyone’s responsibility. Illegal dumping hurts our environment, lowers property values, and takes taxpayer dollars away from other important needs in our community.

I encourage everyone to do their part by properly disposing of trash, reporting illegal dumping when you see it, and helping us protect the beauty of Greene County for future generations.

We can do better, and together, we will.

So last night I went to the annual Sportsman’s Fest at Belvoir Free Will Baptist Church to hear Mitchell Johnson speak. We walked in, they marked our hands with a cross in magic marker, and gave us a ticket for the event.

I looked at that marker and immediately told Mama, “If this doesn’t wash off before church in the morning, they are gonna think we were was out drinking last night.”

So this morning I scrubbed my hand like I was trying to remove evidence from a crime scene and managed to get most of it off. I thought I was in the clear.

What I DIDN’T realize was apparently sometime during the night I slept with my forehead against my hand.

So now the cross is gone from my hand… and somehow transferred directly onto my forehead.

Nothing humbles a man faster than standing in the mirror on Sunday morning realizing you stamped your own forehead.
