Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

🚒 Motor Vehicle Crash

Castoria Rural Fire Association assisted by Maury Vol. Fire & Rescue and GCEMS responded to a single motor vehicle collision on HWY 258 N. near Nash Road. Members arrived and extracted one occupant from the vehicle, the occupant was transported to the hospital by GCEMS with unknown injuries.

At approximately 6:43pm Sunday evening Castoria Rural Fire Association along with our Automatic Aid from Maury Fire & Rescue & Snow Hill Rural Fire were dispatched to a structure fire on Vandiford/Thomas Road upon arrival
Units called in a working Fire we started Fire attack in upstairs and downstairs we then called for Additional departments from Walstonburg & Hookerton After several ours and the help from our partners the fire was extinguished we had and awesome team working getting the job done it was a total loss and I can’t thank enough the departments that dropped everything to help us and then everyone chipped in to salvage what we could for the home owners Great job and dedication nothing like a volunteer firefighters cause is still under investigation by Emergency Management
