When a hurricane is approaching, time matters. Having a plan in place before a storm threatens can help keep you and your family safe.

✔️ Secure your home by covering windows and bringing in loose outdoor items
✔️ Know your sheltering options and plan for your pets
✔️ Have your go-bag, medications, and emergency supplies ready
✔️ Charge your phones and fill up or charge your vehicle early
✔️ Check on neighbors, especially elderly or vulnerable residents

🌀 Hurricane Preparedness Week 🌀

Today’s focus is all about getting ahead of the storm before it ever forms. The time to prepare is now—not when a hurricane is already approaching.

Make sure you:
✔️ Develop and review your evacuation plan
✔️ Build or restock your disaster supply kit (food, water, batteries, radio, cash)
✔️ Check your insurance coverage and document your belongings
✔️ Create a communication plan, including a written list of contacts
✔️ Take steps to strengthen your home

A little preparation now can make a big difference later. Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready.

🌀 Hurricane Preparedness Week 🌀

Hurricane Preparedness Week started yesterday, and Day 1 was all about understanding your risk from both water and wind.

Hurricanes don’t just bring strong winds—they can cause storm surge, flooding from heavy rain, tornadoes, and dangerous rip currents. It’s important to know how these hazards could impact you and your family here at home.

Take time to:
✔️ Determine if you live in a flood-prone area
✔️ Know if you are in an evacuation zone
✔️ Identify potential risks to your home (especially mobile homes or homes with basements)
✔️ Understand how water and wind could affect your area

Being aware of your risk is the first step in being prepared. Stay tuned this week as we continue sharing daily preparedness tips!

🔥 Burn Ban Update 🔥

As of this morning, the burn ban remains in effect across North Carolina.

While we did receive some rain overnight, conditions are still not safe for open burning at this time.

We will share updates as soon as anything changes. Please stay tuned for more information.

🚫 Please do not burn until the ban has been officially lifted.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Fire danger is high, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Fires can start almost immediately and easily from all causes. Fires can spread rapidly and intensify quickly. Spot fires can be a constant danger.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
