Our hearts are full when we see people like Jean Burns quietly giving their time and talents to make our community better.

While many of us drive by without a second thought, Jean has been hard at work restoring and repainting historical markers, helping preserve the stories that make Scurry County special. Her dedication is just one example of the countless hours many volunteers have poured into preparing for Scurry County’s 150th Celebration and the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street traveling exhibit this October.

So much of this work happens behind the scenes. It isn’t done for recognition or praise, it is simply done because people care.

Today, we are especially grateful for every volunteer who has given their time, energy, and heart to our community. Your efforts matter, and they do not go unnoticed. Thank you for helping Scurry County and Snyder shine.

Every new business conversation starts with one important question: “Can we succeed here?”
In Snyder, we believe businesses deserve more than a location. They deserve support, partnership, and a community that wants them to thrive long term.
That commitment continues to shape the work we do every day at DCOS.

There is something special about a community that continues showing up for one another.
In Snyder, progress is not just measured in projects or numbers. It is measured in partnerships, small business success stories, students preparing for the future, and neighbors investing back into the place they call home.

That is the kind of momentum that creates opportunity, strengthens our community, and leaves a lasting impact for generations to come. The DCOS is proud to play a part in supporting those efforts and helping build a stronger future for Snyder and Scurry County.

Last week we featured Dr. Jessica Gore, Superintendent of Snyder Independent School District, and her commitment to preparing students not just for graduation, but for life.
Today, we want to talk about what that preparation actually looks like and how DCOS is helping make it possible.

Dr. Gore will be the first to tell you that Snyder ISD's job is pre-K through 12. But she will also tell you that those 13 years are just the beginning. The foundation built in those classrooms, she believes, sets the stage for everything that follows. And so her team is working hard to make sure every student leaves with more than a diploma. They leave with a plan.

For some students, that plan runs through dual credit CTE coursework. New research from Texas Tech confirms what many in West Texas already know intuitively: academic dual credit is valuable, but CTE dual credit is sustainable for life. In a community built on hands-on work and blue-collar pride, that distinction matters deeply.

For others, it starts with exposure. Last month, Snyder ISD hosted its first-ever career fair, connecting students with local employers before they ever walk the stage. Earlier this year, DCOS helped bring highschoolers out to Snyder’s newest manufacturer, Plastic Welding & Fabrication, for a hands-on industry tour because Dr. Gore is right when she says kids don't know what they don't know. Letting them see new industries first hand changes everything.

And for all of them, a new platform called Access is coming to Snyder ISD next school year. It is a career and college exploration tool that builds a digital portfolio for each student, one that follows them for years after graduation. Dr. Gore wants DCOS and local employers on that platform, posting jobs, and connecting directly with students who are ready to work right here in Scurry County. You can hear more about Access at our quarterly Connect Snyder-Building Snyder's Future Workforce on August 6th where Dr Gore will be our guest speaker.

That is the kind of partnership DCOS was built for. Connecting the people doing the training with the people doing the hiring. Making sure the loop closes here in Snyder, not somewhere else. Because when a student trained here gets a job here, buys a home here, and raises a family here, that is what economic development really looks like.

Dr. Gore has made the invitation clear: "That door is open. That seat is open." DCOS is proud to walk through it. And we are just getting started.

Stay tuned for the next feature in our series. There are even more stories of Snyder people, places, and businesses that make our town shine every day.

As we continue sharing the stories of the people and organizations that help make Snyder such a special place to call home, we're proud to highlight another community leader making a lasting impact. Every town has its treasures. In Snyder, some of the most important ones are right in our own backyard. People who pour their heart into our community, schools that strengthen our neighborhoods, and initiatives that make our city shine.

This week, we continue our series by sharing the story of Dr. Jessica Gore, Superintendent of Snyder Independent School District, who brought her passion for school improvement and her family's desire for small-town roots straight to Snyder and hasn't looked back since.

When Dr. Gore was working as an executive director of school improvement in a large West Texas district, she had built an impressive career. But she and her husband wanted something different. They wanted to be home with their children. They wanted community. They wanted the kind of place where one stop sign separates you from work and the commute is three minutes.
Snyder was that place.

She came not just for the lifestyle, but for the challenge. Her entire professional background had been built around turnaround schools, campuses where the work is hard, the need is real, and the impact is lasting. Snyder ISD was exactly that kind of opportunity.
As she puts it: "Our job is to make sure you're ready for those next 40 or 50 years of life because of what you experienced when you were in Snyder ISD."

That kind of thinking doesn't come from a checklist. It comes from someone who chose this work, and chose this town, on purpose.
Since joining Snyder ISD, Dr. Gore has led a meaningful shift in how the district thinks about its students' futures. That mindset is now written into Snyder ISD's three-year strategic plan, with measurable goals, quarterly metrics, and a clear commitment to college, career, and military readiness that goes beyond checking a box.

To bring that vision to life, Dr. Gore knows the school cannot do it alone. She needs partners who know the local landscape, who are hiring, what skills employers are looking for, and which industries are growing. That is exactly where DCOS comes in.

For years, DCOS has worked to build the bridge between Snyder's classrooms and its workforce. From serving on the Snyder High School CTE Advisory Committee and Co-hosting the manufacturing pathway’s welding program build-off, and supporting the internships program through the DECA organization, DCOS has shown up consistently as a partner invested in what happens after graduation day.

That history matters. And with new leadership at Snyder ISD that is eager to collaborate, the opportunity to build something even stronger is here.

Join us later this week as we share more about what Snyder ISD is building for its students and why the partnership between our schools, our businesses, and DCOS is key to keeping Snyder's brightest right here at home.

This past week, Snyder had the opportunity to welcome the FMH Foundation back to our community to see firsthand the impact their incredible $650,000 investment has made across Snyder.

What made this visit so special was seeing the Foundation experience the projects not just as ideas on paper, but as real improvements changing lives and strengthening our community every day. From the upgraded Ritz Community Theatre, to community murals and public art, new hospital surgical and rehabilitation equipment, newly named Lone Star Plaza, and numerous collaborative projects throughout Snyder, their investment has touched our town from one end to the other.

The tour and appreciation reception were facilitated by DCOS in partnership with the City of Snyder Texas, Scurry County, Snyder Chamber of Commerce, Cogdell Memorial Hospital, Snyder Independent School District, and the Ritz Theatre, and many other community partners who continue working together to move Snyder forward.

“The FMH Foundation’s focus on the arts and healthcare became the catalyst for so many transformational projects throughout Snyder,” said DCOS Executive Director Barbara Leatherwood. “Their investment didn’t just fund projects, it created momentum, partnerships, and opportunities that will impact Snyder for generations to come. Watching their team see the results firsthand was incredible.”

We are so grateful to the FMH Foundation for believing in Snyder, trusting the DCOS as the fiscal agent, and helping open doors for continued revitalization and opportunity in our community.

Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks as we highlight each project funded by the FMH Foundation and showcase the lasting impact these investments are making across Scurry County.
