Marker Monday takes us to the Snyder Cemetery. As you enter the cemetery from Avenue E, the marker for T. J. Faught is on the right by the second road. T. J. Faught came to Scurry County in 1879 with other men from Burnet County - W. A. (Billy) Johnson, W. D. Sims and O. P. (Pack) Wolf. All had established ranches in the NE part of the county, with Faught nearest to town. He distinguished himself not only as a rancher but as the sheriff who never carried a gun. The first sheriff elected after the county was organized in 1884 resigned after 6 months. Faught took the appointment in 1885, served out that term and was elected for three terms, serving until 1892.
Faught was a big man who demanded and got respect for law and order during some rowdy times. He never carried a gun just a pool cue stick.
T.J. Faught was married to Ophelia Sims and they had an adopted daughter, Hattie. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge which was organized in Snyder in December 1890. He built a Lodge hall for the Masonic Lodge on the second floor of a two-story brick building on the NE corner of the Snyder Square (1801 25th St) which bears his name Faught in 1910.
