KBBI Article: Soldotna Elects to Form Charter Commission

James Price was interviewed by KBBI today. Here is an excerpt from the article: (He) has been one of the backers of the grocery tax exemption initiatives. He thinks it’s unfair for the city to put such a big revenue target on nonresidents who shop in Soldotna.

Price: “As a rural resident, I pay much higher property taxes and have a much lower level of services than city residents do. And then they want to insist that we finance their city through sales tax. It’s one of the more unfair systems that we have in the state, and that’s just what it is...I expect that there’s going to be more battles in the future, unfortunately.”

Unofficial election results show Soldotna voters have approved the creation of a Home Rule Charter Commission. There are about 100 absentee and mail-in ballots that have not been counted yet, but the final vote count should be Monday, May 16th. Here are the results from ballots cast today, Election Day: 243 Yes votes, 162 No votes, with a low, only 12.67% voter turnout. 60% yes / 40% no.

We would like to thank the 162 Soldotna voters who came out today and voted No to Soldotna's Home Rule.

There will be another vote on whether to approve a new home rule charter once the charter commission completes their document. There will be a public hearing to be announced during the drafting of the charter. We will keep you informed. Thanks again.

Home Rule=Bigger Govt=MORE TAXES

"It seems we do this every year (Special Election voting regarding Home Rule)... Don’t be scared by threats or pie-in-the-sky sales pitches of 'fulfill our destiny' or 'explore the future.' Forty-seven years of tried and true (current city structure) seems to have worked fairly well. Please vote," Soldotna resident Daniel Lynch.

"Soldotna doesn't need additional taxing power," letter to the editor that appeared in the Peninsula Clarion Newspaper on Sunday. Written by Soldotna resident Daniel Lynch.

"...we need to ask ourselves, why does the government need this extra power? The power to increase taxes, start new tax schemes and spend the revenue on whatever and whenever, without voter consent? Convention centers, golf courses, airport expansion, chamber of commerce grants, hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to outside consultants and studies, all funded thanks to you, the silent majority, the year-round taxpayers." Please Vote NO Home Rule/Charter on May 10th - Stop the March for Big Government Power.

“I spearheaded the effort to kill home rule. It gave (city government) more POWER OVER PEOPLE. I’m willing to live with a little more restricted government,” said Jerry Anderson about Homer's 1976 attempt at home-rule. Anderson is a former KPB assemblyman and former Homer City Councilman. Homer's 2014 attempt at home rule was VOTED DOWN by the people. September 16, 2014, Homer Tribune

Feb 26, 2016, KSRM article: On a vote of 4-2, the Soldotna City Council decided last night to spend more than $6,000 on a special election May 10th to again ask voters if they’d like to consider the process of becoming a home rule city.

Two Councilors, Meggean Bos-Marquez and Keith Baxter, voted against the proposal, saying the City should save their money and put the question on the regular ballot this fall.

Resident Jim Rice said: "I think some lean times are coming. I’m trying to follow what’s going on in Juneau and I really believe we’re all going to have to – including Soldotna – government’s going to have to be a lot leaner in the future. I hope this charter commission thing isn’t a sign that we’re headed to possibly higher taxes, because I don’t think that should be on the table.”
