Burn permits are suspended Saturday and Sunday May 16th and 17th, in the Kenai – Kodiak Prevention Area due to a high wind advisory and high fire danger. this suspension includes both Kenai and Kodiak zones. Burning of debris piles, lawns, or utilizing a burn barrel is prohibited. Please note that cooking and warming type fires are still allowed but extreme caution must be used due to high wildfire potential should an ember escape, a fire be left unattended or it’s not completely extinguished.

Funny River residents may notice increased helicopter activity near or at Fire Station #5, which may be used as a nearby support location for Alaska DNR-Division of Forestry & Fire Protection during the ongoing response to the Killey River Fire, if needed.

This activity would support wildfire suppression efforts in the area and may continue as operational needs require.

We appreciate the community’s understanding and support as crews work to protect lives, property, and natural resources. For ongoing updates please check at Alaska DNR - Division of Forestry & Fire Protection - DFFP. akfireinfo.com

This past Saturday, April 18th, we proudly celebrated the Push-in Ceremony for Tanker 3 ( #927) at Central Emergency Services Sterling Fire Station. 3 This special tradition marks the addition of a vital new apparatus to our fleet, helping us continue to serve and protect our community. Tanker 3 is a 3,000-gallon tanker that reflects our long-standing commitment to providing the best for residents and visitors in our service area.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Sterling community for your continued support and for joining us at Saturday's ceremony. Your presence means a great deal to all of us not only during this occasion but throughout the previous 40+ plus years.

Thank you as well to the local business, Mama's Chipped China Diner, who helped make the day even more enjoyable with hotdogs as we celebrated this milestone together.

We were also honored to recognize David Bunts for his incredible 40 years of dedicated service to CES and the Sterling community. His commitment to our department has not gone unnoticed as he was one of many who assisted in the formation of the fire station in Sterling.

We’re proud to serve such a supportive and connected community

Frozen Pipes??? Now What Can I Do?

The cold temperatures seem to have a grasp not only on our area but quite possibly the pipes in your house. Don’t Let it Go!

During long periods of sub-zero temperatures, CES sees an increase of accidental house fires, commonly associated with frozen pipes or chimney fires due to improper cleaning. Properly thawing frozen pipes should be done using the cautionary tips listed below.

Remember to take care of yourself along with your house during these frigid temperatures.

• If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.

• Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.

• Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best!

Serving our community is not only about responding to various emergencies, but it is also about being prepared through our training. Each month, our medical director meets with CES personnel to enhance their skills and expand their knowledge and understanding of medical practices. The value of the training has proven to drive the passion to serve our communities.

The life of an EMT does not end with basic certification, but can continue through higher levels, such as Advanced EMT. Evidence can be seen as 8 CES personnel are finishing up their first month of classes and skills to obtain an AEMT certification to better serve the residents and visitors of this great place we call home.
