August 31 is National Overdose Awareness Day and the City of Soledad would like to remind everyone that access to Narcan can save a life.

Earlier this year, the City of Soledad was proud to join the Monterey County Health Department for the ribbon cutting of a free kiosk located in front of the Soledad Fire Station. The kiosk provides free Narcan (naloxone) and fentanyl test strips, helping make lifesaving resources more accessible to our community.

In the video, Mayor Anna Velazquez and Councilmember Eva Banuelos demonstrate how easy it is to access these resources. We encourage everyone to learn about Narcan, know where it is available, and remember that carrying it can help save a life in an emergency.

We are grateful to the Monterey County Health Department for helping bring this important resource to Soledad and for their continued commitment to the health and well-being of our community.

Today, the flags at Soledad City Hall are flying at half-staff in honor and remembrance of Dolly Parton, whose extraordinary life touched millions through her music, generosity, and commitment to children and literacy.

President Donald Trump has ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide through sunset on September 1, 2026, in honor of Dolly’s memory.

Dolly’s legacy also lives on right here in our community.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, children from birth to age 5 can receive a free, age-appropriate book every month, helping Soledad’s youngest residents build a lifelong love of reading.

In this reflection, Sergeant Jesus Contreras shares how 9/11 continues to shape the way he views service and the responsibility of answering the call.

As we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, we are reminded that their courage continues to inspire generations of public safety professionals.

Please join the Soledad Fire Department, the Soledad Police Department and the City of Soledad for our annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony as we come together to remember, honor, and never forget.
