Given lots of commentary on the community group page, here is some supplemental information on budget tax bills with an example shown. No doubt, people are seeing notable increases across the board. That is the result of a multitude of factors.
1 - Increase in mill rate (not controlled by town)
2 - Increase in property values (not controlled by town)
3 - A line item for $51,499 added to the town levy to help fund a portion of the tractor purchase in 2024 (see item in blue on the final budget)
People are getting upset because they are seeing 39.8% increase attributed to the town. That 39.8% is the difference between the TOWN 2nd line item on your bill from 2023 to 2024 (the tractor purchase). The town didn't increase your total tax bill by 39.8%.
The TOTAL amount of money that the TOWN will receive from everyone's property taxes paid for 2025 will be $182,543 (levy). That plus state road aid and shared revenue allocations is what funds the entire town's budget each year (2025 = $615K).
In this particular example, this property tax bill increased by $907. Of that, $165 of it is because of the town tractor levy item. The rest of the increase is county and school district related.
The VAST majority of your property tax paid does not fund the town. Nor is the vast majority of your property tax bill increase this year BECAUSE of the town. The base levy each year is also not decided by the town, it is decided by the state. The annual town budget process happens each fall, is an OPEN meeting, and has a public vote budget hearing to finalize, as it has always been.
There is also much discussion on onsite property reevaluations as other municipalities have had them recently. Those will occur in the town in 2026. This is required periodically by state law.
