Somers Residents,

The Somers Recycling Center will be closed today in observance of Memorial Day. This day serves as an opportunity for reflection and gratitude, allowing us to honor the courageous men and women who sacrificed their lives in service to our nation. As you enjoy the freedoms they fought to safeguard, please take a moment of silence today to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our liberty.

The Public Works crew is excited to celebrate National Public Works Week by hosting a food drive at Geissler's from 8 AM to 3 PM, benefiting Champ's Place in Somers. This is a great opportunity to support the community by donating non-perishable food items to help those in need. Every contribution, big or small, is valuable. Let's unite to make a positive impact and spread the word for a successful drive!

Warm regards,
Somers DPW Staff

🌲🌴🌳🌲🌴🌳🌲🌴🌳🌲🌴🌳🌲🌴🌳🌲🌴🌳🌲
Today, April 24, marks the celebration of Arbor Day in the U.S., falling on the last Friday of April. Flashback to April 10, 1872, in Nebraska City, where journalist and tree enthusiast Julius Sterling Morton kicked off the first Arbor Day. His mission? To get settlers planting trees to beautify the land and boost agriculture. Arbor Day later moved to April 22, Morton's birthday, and a Nebraska state holiday in 1885. Fast forward to 1972, President Richard Nixon declared the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day, just in time for its 100th anniversary, with a nudge to get everyone planting trees far and wide.

Arbor Day serves as a heartfelt tribute to trees, honoring their environmental, social, and economic benefits. By planting these leafy marvels, we can:

~Enhance air and water quality
~Offer delightful shade
~Create a welcoming habitat for wildlife
~Strengthen community spirit

Arbor Day stands as a pledge to a greener tomorrow, linking folks, communities, and businesses to planet-saving reforestation efforts.

Enjoy this beautiful Arbor Day,

Earth Day Through Youth Engagement
Last year, on Earth Day, we launched the Keep America Beautiful - Somers Youth Initiative. This initiative aims to educate the youth of Somers about the importance of caring for our planet, engage them in environmental stewardship activities, and cultivate an appreciation for the natural beauty surrounding us.

The vision is for children in our community to express their thoughts and feelings about Earth Day through their artistic drawings each year as part of this initiative. By providing children with opportunities to connect with local nature, we empower them to recognize their potential to create a positive impact.

I had the pleasure of starting this program with the Children’s Place Pre-School on South Road last year. During my visit, the children listened as I read about recycling, followed by a lively discussion on litter. They were quite enthusiastic! The children then shared their thoughts about Earth Day through drawing and coloring. This year, we will install two visual signs in town, displaying the children’s messages from last year, ensuring their legacy remains visible for all to appreciate.

This year, every child residing in Somers is invited to take part. Encourage them to create a drawing that expresses what Earth Day means to them. Once finished, each child's artwork can be submitted via email to [email protected] or dropped off at the DPW, located at 93 Egypt Road. Template can be found under Photos in the SYI folder.
