On Monday, August 31, 2026, Somers Fire Department personnel participated in training focused on familiarization with mutual aid aerial apparatus. Personnel from Somers and neighboring fire departments reviewed the capabilities and equipment carried by Hazardville Fire District Truck 31, West Stafford Fire Department Tower 144, and Tolland - CT - Fire Department Truck 240.

Because Somers does not have an aerial apparatus of its own, we rely on our mutual aid partners to provide these specialized resources when they are needed. In addition to their aerial ladders and platforms, these apparatus carry multiple ground ladders and a variety of other equipment that can support operations at structure fires and other incidents.

Familiarization with these apparatus helps our personnel understand their capabilities and how they can best be utilized when operating together on an emergency scene.

We greatly appreciate our mutual aid partners, not only for the assistance they provide during emergencies, but also for opportunities like this to train together and strengthen our working relationships.

On Monday, August 17, 2026, the Somers Fire Department conducted tanker shuttle operation training at Somersville Mill Pond in conjunction with Shaker Pines Fire Department.

Why is tanker shuttle training important?
While much of Somers is served by pressurized fire hydrants, there are areas of town without access to a hydrant system. In these areas, tankers play a critical role by shuttling water from an available water source to the scene of a fire.

The large portable tanks pictured in the photos are called dump tanks. Tankers arrive at the scene and dump their water into these tanks. A fire engine can then draft water from the dump tank and pump it to the engine supplying the hose lines being used by firefighters during fire attack operations.

Training on these operations helps ensure that our crews can establish an efficient and reliable water supply when responding to fires in areas without hydrants. Just as importantly, practicing alongside our mutual aid partners helps us work seamlessly together when it matters most.

At 1400hrs, July 4, 2026, the Somers fire department was dispatched along with Hazardville Fire District Truck 31, Shaker Pines Fire Department Engine 52, East Longmeadow Fire Department, and Enfield EMS to a residential structure fire on Royal Manor in Somers. Squad 246 arrived on scene and reported burning vegetation on the exterior of the home and starting to extend to the house. The fire was extinguished and the Somers Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident.

🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸

Today we proudly celebrate Independence Day and the 250th birthday of the United States of America.

For 89 of those 250 years, the members of the Somers Fire Department have had the honor and privilege of serving and protecting the Town of Somers.

As you celebrate with family and friends this Fourth of July weekend, please keep safety in mind:

🔥 Beat the Heat

* Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
* Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
* Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

🍔 Grill Safely

* Keep grills at least 10 feet from buildings, decks, and overhangs.
* Never leave a grill unattended while cooking.
* Keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby.

🏕️ Campfire Safety

* Only use designated fire pits where permitted.
* Keep campfires small and never leave them unattended.
* Completely extinguish fires with water and stir the ashes until they’re cool to the touch.

🚗 Don’t Drink and Drive

* Plan ahead for a sober ride home.
* Use a designated driver or rideshare
* Help keep our roads safe for everyone.

🎆 Fireworks Safety

* Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever possible.
* If using legal consumer fireworks, follow all instructions and local laws.
* Keep spectators at a safe distance, have a bucket of water or hose ready, and never allow young children to handle fireworks.
