Pictured is a water pump cover/ yard ornament that was taken from the front yard of a residence on Bradley Drive in Somerset Township. The owner of the ornament described it as a derrick. She explained that the derrick was constructed by her late husband, who recently passed from Covid-19 complications. The derrick was taken on what would have been their 24th wedding anniversary. Needless to say, this item is irreplaceable. Please assist us in locating the derrick and returning it to its owner.

On Friday August 7th, the Somerset Township Police Department was dispatched to a missing persons report. Upon investigating, it was learned that four juveniles, of the same Somerset Township residence, were purposefully evading their parents. After a nearly five hour search, officers were able to locate the children walking along the roadside. Somerset Township Officer Chris McCann then safely returned them home. Michigan State Police Troopers and K-9, as well as Hillsdale County Sheriff's Deputies assisted in this investigation.

On February 12th, the Somerset Township Police Department began receiving complaints of illegal dumped automotive tires. The complaints and tires continued to pile up through February 23rd. Altogether, nearly sixty tires littered approximately twenty different locations on Somerset Township roadsides. The bulk of the dumping occurred on Baker Rd, Calhoun Rd, Chandler Rd, Walworth Rd and Sandhill Rd.

The Somerset Township Police Department has worked diligently to resolve this situation. A suspect was identified and charges are pending. As of March 13th, all of the dumped tires have been cleaned from the roadsides. Separately, we are working with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Somerset Township Zoning Administrator to clean up properties where there are an excess collection of tires.

I want to thank the Somerset Township Community for their assistance with this issue. The tips and information we received during this investigation were essential to the outcome. As a small police department, community input and involvement are imperative. If you hear, see or know of something going on in your area of the Township or would just like to get to know the members of the your police department stop by our office or call us at (517) 688-9223.

This weekend is the US-12 Garage sales and NASCAR race weekend.

Lots of extra cars on the road and many will be making poor driving decisions, (stopping quickly, looking at the sales while driving, making un-signaled turns, and pulling onto the road while not looking).

Along with the extra cars people, will be parking on both sides of the road and crossing without looking.

BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHEN DRIVING US-12 (E. CHICAGO RD.) THIS WEKEND

As you have seen the snow is here...and so is the wind! The wind is going to have a huge influence on what we are able to do today.

If we indeed get the 1-2" of snow per hour that some are forecasting with the anticipated winds, it will be very difficult for our crews to keep up. Throughout the storm, we will do our best to get over all roads. However, as the storm progresses we may need to switch our concentration to state highways and major paved roads. When the snow begins to blow and cause drifting, some roads may look like they haven't been touched. They may blow shut as soon as our trucks make a pass.

If you can help it, please do not travel through large drifts. Too many times in storm events like this we see stranded vehicles in the middle of intersections or in the middle of the road...this not only puts the occupants of that vehicle in danger, it puts our drivers and emergency personnel in danger too. If the wind is blowing and our drivers are plowing it creates whiteout conditions and our drivers could crash into the stranded vehicles causing them to lose control and potentially injure themselves or others that may still be in the stranded car.

If you have to travel this week, please pay attention to the forecast. Please layer up and dress for the weather. Take additional clothing and blankets with you in case you are stranded. Please be prepared!

Also, our policy is to use straight salt on state highways only. We use a salt and sand mixture on paved roads and we use sand on our gravel roads. Salt generally loses its effectiveness as the temperature drops. According to MDOT, "When temperatures fall to 10 to 20 degrees, the action of the salt (which lowers the freezing temperature of water) takes longer to work. Wet pavement refreezes at a much faster rate. The melting of ice and snow with the dilution of the salt between zero to 10 degrees accelerates refreezing even more."

Please understand some roads will be slippery and possibly impassable at times. Please use good judgement when traveling and be prepared. We want everyone to get home safely.

When is the best time to get ahold of the police department, have called several times with no answer.
We found this old yellow lab wandering around our yard in Lake Somerset just off M-12 about an hour ago. He seems to have arthritis quite bad and was only wearing the faded red training collar. My husband walked around our neighborhood looking for his home, but nobody recognized him. He is very sweet, but does seem a bit confused. If you know who he belongs to please contact the police, my husband Ross Gibson or me.
Is there trunk or treat n fire dept. this yr in Somerset?

We started on some modest decorating for the Holiday season. The park is a place for all to gather and if you'd like to see a variety of decorations and themes...there is room for all. Our holiday decorations supply storage is a bit limited to what we have on hand but donations are certainly appreciated and welcome.
