Free Electronics Collection*
Do you have some old electronic devices (flat screens, computer monitors, towers, laptops, cellphones, tablets, etc..) ones that are outdated, or no longer in use that are collecting dust and taking up space? Please don’t throw them in the trash. Electronics have numerous negative impacts on the environment and need to be disposed of properly, which does involve recycling. JVS Environmental and Somerset County Recycling is holding a free electronics collection event Saturday, June 22, 2024 from 10AM –2PM @ 1606 North Center Ave. Somerset, PA 15501 in the Giant Eagle parking lot. By participating in this event you will help keep toxins out of the landfill while decluttering your home. *There is a $25.00 fee for freon containing devices and a $2.00 fee for fluorescent light bulbs. We are sorry, but smoke detectors, vacuums, e-cigarettes, v**e pens and personal grooming electronics cannot be accepted at this event.

The next FFFF recycling event is tomorrow! It will be a drive through event at the right side of the Giant Eagle on North Center Avenue. You do not need to get out of your car. We prefer you remain in your car for everyone's safety! The volunteers will take your items if you open your trunk or door. They will take your items and you will then proceed to drive around the back of the building and come out on the far side of Harbor Freight (also for safety). Remember no need to sort your plastics any more WOO HOO! Please just make sure they are clean and dry! Please continue to separate aluminum from tin and separate newspaper, magazines and paper into their own bags/boxes. The event starts at 4 pm and ends at 5pm. We respectfully request please do not arrive too early as we will not be setup and will not accept donations early. Arriving too early may create unnecessary traffic blockages in the parking area. In the event you choose to arrive early please park in a parking space until the event is set up. Thank you so much for recycling!

Great News! For those of you who participate in the FFFF recycling event you no longer need to sort/separate your plastics. They can all be mixed together now! The plastics will be sorted at the MRF (Material Recovery Facility). Please continue to separate your aluminum and tin, and your newspaper, office paper/junk mail and magazines into separate bags, or boxes. Next FFFF event is 4/5/24. Thank you for recycling!

There seems to be some confusion about a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event. Somerset County Recycling is NOT hosting a HHW event in April, 2024. We are working on scheduling one with Noble Environmental, which will likely be in July, 2024 if all goes according to plan. Please watch for future posts on this tentative event. Approvals are required from the Department of Environmental Protection in order for this to occur and we are presently in that process. Thank you for being eager to responsibly dispose of your hazardous waste!

Tomorrow is the kickoff for the new FFFF (First Friday 4PM - 5PM) recycling collection process at the North Center Ave. Giant Eagle. Pease have your items clean and correctly sorted in bags (see below for sorting instructions). This will make the process run quickly and smoothly, and most of all it should prevent you from needing to exit your car for any reason, which will improve safety for everyone. If your items are not sorted, you will be asked to pull into a parking space and sort them (with help from a volunteer if needed). If donations are not clean, you will be asked to clean them before they can be accepted at a future recycling event. See you tomorrow (Friday 4/1/24) at 4 PM!!! Thank you SO much for recycling!

Hope this is easier to see!

Look at this great event! The only thing better than recycling is re-using and re-purposing.

Please see photo for 3/1/24 FFFF recycling event new drop off route at North Center Giant Eagle. Goal is to have three cars dropping off at one time, one behind the other with volunteers coming to each car to remove donations and then directing cars to exit around and behind the buildings. Once all cars are moved out, the next three will pull in. Please be patient with the volunteers. They are trying very hard to increase ease, safety and speed of drop off. Please clean and sort your items so the process can run smoothly. As a reminder sort #1 plastics in their own bag, #2 plastic in their own bag, #3,4,5,6 &7 plastics can be mixed together in one bag; please do not mix paper products. Please place office paper and junk mail in one bag, magazines in one bag, and newspapers in one bag. For metal donations please put aluminum in one bag, tin in a separate bag and "cat food cans" in their own bag. Corrugated cardboard and paperboard can be mixed together. These steps will greatly help the volunteers process recyclables quickly and safely. THANK YOU for recycling and helping improve the process.

BIG Change is in the air for this Friday’s (3/1/24) FFFF recycling event! Those of you familiar with the First Friday from 4 PM – 5PM recycling events are in for a new experience. The event will be moved to the Right side of the North Center Ave Giant Eagle store. If you are standing in front of the store facing it, the event will be a drive through event on the right side of the building. It will be conducted much like the Electronic Collection events, so if you are familiar with those events, this will be familiar also. You will drive up to the volunteers, open your trunk, or hatch, or tell the volunteer where your recyclables are located in your vehicle, they will remove, scan items (if all is correctly sorted and clean the volunteer will then deposit items in correct bins and send you on around the back of the building where you will drive the perimeter and come out on the other side of Harbor Freight, free to go on with your evening). If the volunteers feel the items are not sorted, or acceptable they will inform you to either go to a parking spot and sort your items, or if items are not properly cleaned, they will kindly ask you to take them back home and clean them for a future contribution. The goal is to increase safety, speed and accuracy of sorting, all while keeping you in your vehicle. Please be patient with the volunteers as they try to improve the experience and safety for all involved!
