May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and NAMI Minnesota would like to highlight the special work happening across the state to support people living with mental illnesses and their families. We want to place a special focus on serious mental illness and the importance of early recognition and support. One in five adults experiences a mental illness each year, and many of these conditions are severe. Recognizing early warning signs and connecting people to care sooner can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Recovery is possible, and education and community support play a key role.

May 4 was chosen as the date to celebate International Firefighter' Day as it is also the Feast Day of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

A Roman officer known for his courage and leadership, St Florian is remembered for his role in organising firefighting brigades and for standing firm in the face of danger.

His legacy lives on in firefighters around the world today.

On this day, we honour not only tradition—but the enduring spirit of service and protection. We celebrate and thank brave firefighters around the world who risk their lives to protect our communities. Your courage, commitment, and dedication never go unnoticed. Stay safe, and know that you are deeply appreciated.

Last night we held our quarterly joint board meeting, and we are excited to share that both boards have officially accepted our first Strategic Plan for 2026–2046. This long-range plan will guide us as we navigate the continued growth and development in Somerset. It reflects a clear vision for our community's future, and we are proud of the work that went into it.

It’s the first day of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin!

Time to dust off those weather radios and stretch those “run-to-the-basement” muscles. Wisconsin loves surprises – tornadoes, hail, and sideways rain, so let’s get prepped and stay alert! This week is all about staying informed, prepared and keeping our communities safe. Here in Wisconsin, we average 23 tornadoes annually, with 39 confirmed last year.

This is your reminder to review your weather safety plans, prepare your home & vehicle emergency kits, and ensure you have multiple ways of receiving warnings. Emergency Management will be sharing info about how to prepare for and respond to severe weather all week.

This week, we recognize the voices behind the scenes—the ones who may never see the chaos, but feel every bit of it.

Our dispatchers are the calm in the chaos.
The steady voice in someone’s worst moment.
The ones who answer the call—every single time—without hesitation.

They are the first first responders.
Before the lights, before the sirens… there is a voice on the other end of the line bringing order to the unimaginable.

As firefighters and first responders, we rely on that voice more than words can express. And for some of us, we know firsthand the weight that comes with sitting behind that console.

To our dispatchers—those who send us out and those who walk in both worlds—thank you.
For your strength, your patience, your compassion, and your ability to stay calm when everything else isn’t.

We couldn’t do what we do without you—and we wouldn’t want to.
