At the Maryland Municipal League Excellence in Leadership Conference, the Town of Somerset was honored to receive the Maryland Municipal Achievement Award for Excellence in Community Engagement. Somerset received this award in recognition of our programs and events that bring residents together and strengthen civic life including the annual Newcomers Party, the annual Nonagenarians Ice Cream Social, the Mayor’s Monthly Brown Bag Lunch, the Communications Committee’s quarterly Town Talks lecture series, and most notably the Youth Entrepreneurial Market.
Hosted collaboratively by the Youth Town Council and Town Staff, the Youth Entrepreneur Market invited students from kindergarten through twelfth grade in Somerset and nearby municipalities to showcase and sell their creations at the Town Hall.
Reflecting on the award, Youth Council President Sara Guinand noted how meaningful this recognition is for young people in the community, saying, “This award shows that when young people are given space to contribute, they can have a real impact on the community. The Youth Entrepreneur Market wasn’t just an event, it was a moment where kids and teens felt seen, supported, and part of something bigger in Somerset.”
Your innovative programs, strong leadership, and dedication to improving the quality of life in Maryland’s municipalities exemplify the very best of municipal service. Each of you demonstrates how collaboration, creativity, and community engagement can drive meaningful change and make a lasting impact. Thank you for your continued commitment to excellence and for setting a shining example for municipalities everywhere.
