The Mission of Somerset Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc., is to provide reliable electric service and seek ways to improve the quality of life of its members and their neighbors. On May 11, 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt si

gned Executive Order 7037 establishing the Rural Electrification Administration (REA). The goal was to bring the benefits of electricity to rural America. It was early 1939 ...when initial steps were taken that led to the organization of a rural electric cooperative, but it wasn’t until March of 1940 that the first power lines were actually energized. The actual incorporation was signed on March 8, 1939, and was filed in the Department of State on March 14, 1939. There were nine incorporators. The By-Laws were adopted at a meeting on March 21, 1939. By April 24, 1939, a total of 867 members were signed with 661 reported as having paid the $5 membership fee. The first employees that were hired included eight men as a right-of-way crew and two clerical workers. In 1940, the average monthly use per member was 32 kilowatt hours. In 2008, the average monthly use per member was 1,059 kilowatt hours. There have been many changes over the years, but the Cooperative continues to be operated in the same way as it was at the very beginning. A nine-member board of directors continues to set the policies for the operation. A General Manager and staff of forty-three employees carry out the day-to-day operations of the Cooperative. At Somerset Rural Electric Cooperative, we appreciate your feedback, both the positive and negative; however, we do reserve the right to, at any time, remove any post we feel is inappropriate, rude, offensive, or any negative feedback that is presented without constructive criticism.

Outage update - 6:30 a.m.

It is a start of another early morning and long day as the linemen resumed their restoration work and the cleanup of downed poles, lines, and equipment at day break.

Some of this work will require segments of our system that currently have power to be switched off temporarily to allow the crews to work safely. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

🦺 Please be aware of traffic flaggers and equipment that needs to operate near road ways.

Outage Update - 10:00 p.m.

Crews have restored power to over 3000 members since yesterday afternoon. Remaining work includes setting poles and installing new wires in several areas where the storm caused the most damage.

We will resume work before daylight tomorrow after the linemen get some much needed rest.

Thank you to our own linemen and linemen from New Enterprise Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc. and Valley Rural Electric Cooperative for assisting with service repairs and outage restoration.

Neighboring cooperative crews have joined outage restoration efforts. About 10 broken poles remain with approximately 500 members without power.

Outside crews will assist through the day and tomorrow if needed.

Please stay back from downed power lines and trees. Do not attempt to remove trees that are near potential energized lines.

As line sections are reconnected, if you receive an automated call confirming your power is on or not, we ask that you acknowledge these prompts as it helps the dispatcher know if there are additional problem areas.

Currently, there are no estimated times for power to be restored. There are extremely damaged sections of lines that require intensive repair work.

We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have additional outage details, please leave a message when calling 814-445-4106. Thank you!

Please stay away from downed power lines and trees on lines. All crews are dispatched and spread throughout the western portion of our service territory.

As outages begin to restore, please confirm that your power is back on. Do not assume that your power is on, just because your neighbor has power.

If you have helpful information to assist the crews, please leave a message by calling 814-445-4106 or through our SmartHub app.
