Last Friday, students at Kentucky State Fire Rescue Training District 14 completed their 40 hours of Hazardous Materials Technician training after a full week of hands-on instruction and realistic hazardous materials scenarios. This class, offered in partnership with Kentucky Emergency Management, was designed to prepare responders to safely and effectively manage hazardous materials incidents while meeting current NFPA standards.

Throughout the week, students worked through a variety of real-world scenarios involving product identification, leak control, decontamination procedures, chemical protective clothing, scene management, and coordinated incident operations. The training placed students in challenging situations that required teamwork, communication, and critical decision-making under pressure.

By the end of the week, participants had successfully completed multiple evolving hazardous materials scenarios that reflected incidents responders may encounter in the field. The professionalism, dedication, and hard work shown by the students and instructors throughout the week was outstanding.

We appreciate Kentucky Emergency Management, all Instructors, and the students who dedicated their time to continuing to strengthen hazardous materials response capabilities across the Commonwealth.

This week, students from across the region are attending the Hazardous Materials Technician class at Kentucky State Fire Rescue Training District 14. This class is being offered in partnership with Kentucky Emergency Management and is designed to meet current National Fire Protection Association standards for Hazardous Materials Technician training, preparing responders to safely operate in dangerous hazardous materials environments.

Throughout the week, students are participating in hands-on training involving hazardous materials response, leak control, product identification, decontamination procedures, chemical protective clothing, and incident management. One of the practical skills being completed during the course is the application of a “C-Kit” on simulated leaking rail car valves and containers.

A C-Kit is a specialized leak control device used by hazardous materials teams to help stop or reduce chlorine leaks from rail cars and ton containers. Chlorine is commonly transported throughout the country for industrial and water treatment purposes, and even a small leak can create a serious risk to responders and the public. During training, students learn how to properly identify the leak, safely approach the container while wearing protective equipment, and apply the C-Kit to help control the release until the situation can be stabilized.

Training opportunities like this help ensure firefighters and emergency responders across the Commonwealth remain prepared to safely and effectively manage real-world hazardous materials incidents while protecting their communities and fellow responders. We appreciate the dedication and commitment shown by all students, instructors, and partners involved in this week’s training.
