Vehicle Fire in Westbound Allegheny Tunnel Causes Temporary Closure of Interstate 76

Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, PA — On June 4, 2026, at approximately 8:14 p.m., the Pennsylvania State Police responded to a vehicle fire inside the westbound Allegheny Tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76 Westbound) at Mile Marker 122.2 in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County.
Due to the location of the fire within the tunnel, the westbound tunnel was closed to traffic while fire suppression and emergency operations were conducted.

Approximately 150 motorists from nearly 80 vehicles were evacuated from the tunnel and transported by bus to a nearby Pennsylvania Turnpike maintenance facility. Motorists were permitted to return to their vehicles at approximately 2:45 a.m. Vehicles cleared the tunnel shortly after 3:00 a.m., and the roadway reopened at approximately 3:20 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the fire experienced a medical emergency and was transported from the scene by medical helicopter for treatment. The medical emergency was not related to the vehicle fire.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The westbound tunnel remains closed pending inspection. Traffic is currently being maintained in a bi-directional pattern through the eastbound tunnel.
Motorists traveling through the area should be prepared for traffic delays, reduce speed, obey all posted traffic control devices, and exercise caution while traveling through the work zone and traffic crossover areas.

The incident was managed through a coordinated response involving the Pennsylvania State Police, local fire departments, emergency medical services, emergency management personnel, and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission operations staff.

The cause of the vehicle fire remains under investigation.
