Somersworth Prevention Coalition

Somersworth Prevention Coalition We are a community-based coalition working to reduce substance misuse among youth by actively engaging community partners in prevention efforts.

The Coalition formed in 2009 by a dedicated group of Somersworth educators, community members, students, parents, law enforcement, faith-based leaders, healthcare personnel, government officials and others who saw a need to combat the alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs being misused by teens and community members. Community partnership has been the foundation of our Coalition. The formation was ini

tially made possible by a small, one-time funding opportunity from ONEVoice for Strafford County and the United Way. In 2015, after years of attempts at federal funding to sustain their passionate prevention efforts, the Coalition was finally awarded a $125,000 federal prevention grant called the Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program Grant from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONCDP), administered by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). This grant has enabled us to hire a full-time Coordinator and four youth empowerment advisors between the Somersworth Middle and High Schools, to offer training and skill-building opportunities for our youth empowerment teams (called Youth to Youth), and provide prevention-related materials and presentations to families, friends, and the community. We work to reduce substance misuse in Somersworth through education, community involvement, public policy awareness and strategic planning efforts. We meet once a month, every month, and welcome all community participation. There are so many ways you can get involved with us!
