Raymond Mattia, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation, was shot and killed by Border Patrol last week. He called police because there were people on his property he wanted removed. According to his family, he was two feet from his door when police showed up and immediately started firing.
There is very little infrastructure outside of police so for many, calling the cops is the only option available. But not only did the state not assist him, they killed him. And this is not an uncommon story - being met with violence or death at the hands of police when seeking their assistance.
Police are not the answer. They don't prevent issues from occurring, they merely react to them. How many issues could be avoided completely if our communities received the investment that police gets?
Our communities deserve better. We deserve resources and infrastructure outside of police. We deserve to live long, healthy, and joyful lives.
