Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association Non-profit organization supporting two 18th-century NJ landmarks in Somerville, NJ—Wallace House, Gen.

Washington’s HQ in the Revolution, and Old Dutch Parsonage, home to Frelinghuysen family and Jacob Hardenbergh, 1st president of Queens College. Established in 1974 as a “Friends” group, today the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to the preservation and restoration of these New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places sites. Su

pplementing the efforts of New Jersey's Division of Parks and Forestry, the Association raises funds for furnishing, restoring, and improving the sites as well as preserving and interpreting their place in New Jersey’s and the nation’s heritage. The Association also serves as an advocate for the sites and networks with other local historic groups on multi-site events and programs. The Wallace House became a museum in 1897 thanks to The Revolutionary Memorial Society, a group of New Jersey citizens led by New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Bergen. Public outcry and the assistance of the Frelinghuysen family led to the salvaging and preservation of The Old Dutch Parsonage in 1913. Both homes became New Jersey State historic sites in 1947. Today, the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association continues this legacy of citizen involvement in its efforts on behalf of the sites.

Have you been hoping to apply to Somerset County's award-winning docent training program? You have one more chance! There are only a few spots available in this free training cohort. The application deadline has been extended to Friday, August 28, 2026. Apply fast, apply soon, don't miss out on the fun.

Amy Bigge, a docent graduate from the pilot program, said “Every aspect of the program was fun and a great opportunity to learn more about the local area and its history. After the program officially ended, I continued volunteering at the Abraham Staats House as a docent and am proud to also have had the opportunity to serve on their board. I’ve met really great people, made new friends, have learned so much and am happy to serve as an ambassador of our local history!”

In honor of America’s 250th anniversary and all who fought for our country, Pvt. Moore (Brian Thehistorynerd) read the names of Revolutionary War soldiers from the area, some of whom are buried in Somerville’s Old Cemetery.

Thank you to the Somerville Historic Advisory Committee for their research in compiling this list.
