Today, September 1, is Primary Election Day. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Vote-by-mail ballots must be placed in a dropbox before 6 p.m. or hand-delivered to Elections at City Hall (93 Highland Ave.) before 8 p.m. Learn more and check your polling location at somervillema.gov/elections.

Somerville’s annual Water System Flushing Program continues today, Thursday, August 6th, and continues through late October.
This program consists of flushing pipes at high velocities to clean water mains and maintain the highest possible water quality.

Temporary drops in water pressure and/or discolored water can occur. In these cases, though the water may be discolored, it is safe to drink. Until the water runs clear, it is advisable to avoid washing laundry, especially white fabrics.

Somerville’s annual Water System Flushing Program continues today, Thursday, August 6th, and continues through late October.

A Heat Advisory is currently in place for Somerville for Thursday and Friday, August 6 and 7, with feels-like temperatures up to 100 degrees.

If you must be outside during high heat, practice sun safety by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Baseball caps provide some shade, however a hat that has a wide brim all around helps shade your face, ears, and neck. To help stay cool, you can also wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Even if you follow the above sun safety precautions, it’s still a good idea to limit time spent in the direct sun.

UPDATE: This Heat Advisory has been canceled by the National Weather Service. However, please continue to take precautions if spending time outdoors as temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s over the coming days.

A Heat Advisory is currently in place for Somerville for Tuesday and Wednesday, July 14-15 with feels-like temperatures around 100 degrees.

If you plan to be outside on high-heat days, it’s a good idea to wear clothing and accessories that can help you keep cool.

In general, light-colored clothing like pastels, white, or khaki is better than black, navy, or dark green. Dark colors are more likely to absorb heat.

Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing helps air flow over your skin. Also, loose-fitting and breathable long-sleeved shirts aren’t necessarily a bad choice in hot weather because they can help protect your skin from sunburn.

The East Branch of the Somerville Public Library (115 Broadway) will be open from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 for anyone needing a place to cool down during the hot weather. All other library branches and City offices are closed Saturday for the Independence Day holiday.

Based on an Extreme Heat Warning from the National Weather Service, the City is declaring a Heat Emergency for Wednesday through Saturday, July 1-4. Dangerously hot temperatures are expected, with highest feels-like temperatures around 110 degrees. These extreme temperatures pose a serious risk of heat-related illness, and everyone is encouraged to review and follow precautions to stay safe and cool. Although there is no Heat Warning in place after Saturday, the weather is expected to remain hot through the holiday weekend.

To help stay cool, you can seek relief from the heat in air-conditioned City buildings, head to Dilboy Pool (110 Alewife Brook Pkwy.) or Latta Pool at Foss Park (235 Broadway) with no admission fees, or visit water features that are located at many Somerville city parks and playgrounds. Taking steps to keep cool and safe is very important during extreme heat:

NEVER leave children or pets in a car, even for a quick errand and even if the windows are open.

Stay indoors as much as possible.

Avoid outdoor activities, if possible, especially during the heat of the day. Stay out of the direct sun.

Drink plenty of water.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat illness. Call 911 in an emergency.
