AMEX Prescribed Fire Update (Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Experiment unit) – June 5, 2026

Fire crews with the Stanislaus National Forest Sugar Pine Ranger District completed the Middle Unit yesterday and are continuing operations in the East Unit today.

The AMEX unit is a long-term, collaborative study designed to test how different forest treatments and climate-adapted tree seeds impact reforestation and long-term forest health.

Smoke was noticeable in and around the Pinecrest Lake Basin this morning, and once the temperature started to rise the inversion layer lifted and smoke dispersed. Smoke will continue to be visible from Hwy 108 and the Pinecrest Lake Basin. California Air Resource Board and Tuolumne/ Mariposa County Air Pollution smoke specialists are monitoring the air quality.

On Saturday, June 6, operations will continue, if conditions allow, in the third and final unit (West Unit).

Questions? Call Public Information Officers, Kimberly Peterson (PIO3), and Eugenie Moore (PIO3T) at 209-459-0219.

AMEX Prescribed Fire Update – June 4, 2026

Fire crews with the Stanislaus National Forest Sugar Pine Ranger District began ignitions this morning for the prescribed fire on the Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Experiment unit (AMEX). Crews are burning off the dead and down fuel in the Experimental Forest near Crabtree Road (4N26).

Smoke will be visible from Hwy 108 and the Pinecrest Lake Basin. Smoke will be heavier in the morning due to the inversion layer. California Air Resource Board and Tuolumne/ Mariposa County Air Pollution smoke specialists are monitoring the air quality.

to trail work that left us sweaty, dirty, and ridiculously proud. Those switchbacks didn’t build themselves and those logs definitely didn’t roll off the trail on their own.

This week’s photo takes us back to June 1989, when the Wilderness Rangers were “showing their best side” while muscling a sizeable log off the Relief Valley Trail near Deer Lake.

With National Trails Day coming up on June 6th, we’re gearing up to hit the trail again. Want in? Lace up your hiking boots and let’s make some trail magic happen. Join us and our partners this weekend!

Planning on getting away for the weekend? Don't worry! There are plenty of other events celebrating National Trails Day all over. We'll put a link in the comments 😉

Whatever your weekend plans look like, we hope they include some time — and a few miles — out on a trail.

🔥🔥🔥PRESCRIBED FIRE UPDATE 🔥🔥🔥
Due to favorable conditions firefighters with the Stanislaus National Forest's Sugar Pine Ranger District will begin ignitions tomorrow, June 4th in the experimental forest off of Crabtree Rd in the Sugar Pine Ranger District. The burn will continue throughout Saturday and will be monitored and patrolled through the weekend. Smoke may be visible from Highway 108.

With a planned 96 acres, the RX burn is part of the Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Experiment (AMEX). AMEX is a multi-partner collaboration (Cal Fire, University of Nevada Reno, University of California Cooperative Extension, US Forest Service) testing different treatments that help forests resist mortality and recover from disturbances.

Established in 2018, the experiment contains nine strategically located sites across the Sierra Nevada to study forest responses to potential extreme mortality events such as drought and high severity wildfire. At the Stanislaus-Tuolumne Experimental Forest, reforestation options are being tested.

Stanislaus National Forest extends seasonal MVUM closure for two high elevation roads

SONORA, California, (June 1, 2026) – Following a series of evaluations by Stanislaus National Forest Recreation Specialists, the Forest has issued Forest Order STF-16-2026-78 cleaving closed Forest Road No. 8N13 and a portion of Forest Road No. 4N12, two roads in the forest’s higher elevations. Although the Forest generally had a mild winter, snow accumulations across some high elevation forest roads continue to prevent safe travel on some roads subject to seasonal closures.
As a result, the forest is issuing an extension of the seasonal road closure from June 1, 2026, through June 15, 2026, for the following roads:

Calaveras Ranger District
1. Forest Road No. 8N13 (Stanislaus Meadow)

Sugarpine Ranger District
1. Forest Road No. 4N12 (Herring Creek Road) at 18EV463 Junction.

Forest Road Nos. 5N01, 4N12, 5N40Y, 7N09, 7N23 and 17EV485 may continue to be used by over-snow vehicles. To utilize over-snow vehicles on these routes, users must determine that there is a minimum of 12 inches of snow on the route. Adequate snow depth provides for user safety and enough clearance between the over-snow vehicle and the ground surface to protect resources.

If determined the roads are sufficiently clear of snow and downed trees and free of significant road failures or impacts to allow for safe travel and to protect resources and roads from damage, the order may be partially or wholly terminated prior to June 15th, 2026. Conditions will continue to be monitored on a regular basis and when applicable, roads will be opened to allow public access. You can read the full forest order in the comments below
