As we approach the upcoming elections, it’s important to know that removing or tampering with political campaign signs on yards or private property is illegal. Being civic-minded and passionate about issues affecting our community and country is admirable, but theft and property damage are not.

No matter how you feel about someone’s political views, going onto private property to take down or damage signs, or removing or damaging signs legally placed on public property, breaks the law and can lead to fines or criminal charges.

We encourage the community to respect each other’s rights to express opinions, especially during this election season.

City of Sonora Signage Guidelines:

Temporary noncommercial election signs can be displayed within the City of Sonora right-of-way or landscape areas. Signs may be placed 30 days before any local, state, or federal election and must be removed within 10 days after the election.

Placement: Signs must be freestanding and supported by a temporary structure. Signs must not be attached to any City structure.

Signs cannot be placed to obstruct vision on streets, driveways, or alleys. They must not confuse or block the view of any traffic signs or signals.

For further details or questions, please refer to Municipal Code Sections 15.28.040 and 15.28.050(M) or contact the City of Sonora’s Community Development Department at (209) 532-3508.

Thank you for your attention and for helping keep Sonora a great place to live, work, and visit!

On May 23, 2026, at 4:16 p.m, the Sonora Police Department received a Be On The Lookout for a possible carjacking of a silver Toyota Tacoma with a flat tire. Each year, the Sonora Police Department receives $7,000 through Cannabis Dispensary development agreements to support drug awareness and education focused on ma*****na use. Previous projects include the “Know the Risks” campaign in partnership with the Tuolumne County Health Department and, more recently, the “Safe Summer Sonora” campaign.

This year, we are pleased to announce that Sonora Elementary 5th and 6th-graders received a presentation by Laura Stack, CEO and founder of Johnny’s Ambassadors. Johnny’s Ambassadors educates teens, parents, and communities about the risks of today’s potent THC products, including ma*****na, dabs, vapes, and edibles, and their impact on adolescent brain development, psychosis, and su***de. Their program emphasizes data-driven facts and clear messaging to promote youth awareness, prevention, and education about THC.

The event took place on Wednesday, May 20th, at 9:00 am at Sonora Elementary School. While the event was not open to the general public, local media was welcome to attend and report on the educational benefits provided to our students. Parents were notified of the event through the school’s standard protocols.

Sonora PD Project Manager, Steve Hart, identified middle school students as the ideal audience for this training based on research and local input. In collaboration with Lora Hunter, Principal of Sonora Elementary School, Steve arranged for this renowned speaker to visit Sonora.

Sonora High School Safety Update: No Credible Threat

At about 11:15 this morning, Sonora High Administration received a tip through an anonymous reporting app about a student possibly showing a firearm to another student. The administration requested additional details from the reporter, but no additional information was provided.

The Sonora Police Department responded to campus and worked with school officials to investigate the report. They determined there was no credible threat to the school, students, or staff. Out of an abundance of caution and to help students and staff feel safe, officers remained on campus during the scheduled rally.

We recognize that misinformation can cause unnecessary concern. Please rely on official sources for updates.
